  • Cast & stamped cowl grills on eBay

OK guys, I HAVE my cowl grills for both my 41 and 45 but someone has three sets on eBay at item number 120531189994 (just go to eBay and plug the number into the search blank space).

I know from experience how hard it is to find the pre-war cast grills so this could be a real opportunity for someone with a "41 Deluxe".

One of the pre-war grills has had the side "wing" cut off. Whoever buys them please DON'T CUT THE OTHER ONE!!!! Once they are cut they can't be returned to original! If you want to put a matching pair on till you find another one with the wing intact, get with me and I have one already cut you can use.

I don't know who has them for sale and I won't be bidding, but I looked for an intact set for YEARS. The stamped ones and the cast ones will NOT fit in the same nose bowls, but you should be able to recover a little money by selling the stamped ones (they are still available new). The cast ones are the ones worth a bundle.

    OK, Hank-

Thanks for the tip. I'm looking very closely at the situation. I've only seen one other set go there and it looked intact and complete.

...I won't ask you what you paid for yours. If you bought them on eBay I think I may already know!

The last O-145 engine I looked at went for less than those. (*Ouch*)

We'll see how it goes. I may take you up on your offer if I win. Chopped originals are better than no originals. And a good airbrush I'm thinking can do a serious bit of artwork toward making up for the rest if it finally comes to it. It will fly just as well.

Apparently my nose bowl fits all kinds. Because it had all three when I bought the plane... some with screws.

There is some other stuff on EBay from a guy in Hico,WV he bought a plane from a guy in NC and is really trying to highball the small stuff (he already sold the plane again), he also picked up a cessna project and was selling that, he keeps changing the how and why seems to be a proffesional EBayer, hell he wants $400 for the inst panel face claiming that it will make your antique look better, I told him that I would make my own for alot less and look just as good.
      I hate guys like this.

Do you have a link to the stuff he is selling? Sometimes the photos on eBay are good to save for future reference.

Plus we can get together and try and find whoever buys the stuff. Always nice to add Indians to the Tribe!

I think those may already have been sold. I went to the Barnstormers' site and they weren't there.

I DID find a guy I sent my rusted-out exhaust clamps to a few years back and never heard from again!
(...Good thing I saved one set. Needed the pattern for new SS replacements.)

The grills on ebay went for $171? One was broke and all were ruff cast needing the ol'sweat and polish. Here is where I am, on my odessy of sand until your arms fall, take a day off and do it again, and again, and again, and again. I have; since this pic. finished putting a high polish on the center grill and have moved one of the side grills in to the sanding for ever position and have just started grinding off the flash on the last one. After they are all polished to the chrome look I will let my buddy at the body shop clear coat them. He does show bikes this way and it looks like chrome and the aluminum will stay that way with out any more polishing for years even if left outside!

You are doing nice work Larry! Mindless, tedious work is good for the soul. You will be set for a career in Government service when you finish.
I have a set of those rough cast grills and it is good to see that there are some nice parts under all that flash.

Dunno but the price of the front cowl went from 57 bucks to I think 176 in 5 seconds, I missed out on that

I checked and the other high bidders looked like parts dealers. One bid on 17 items in one day. I hate bidding against list members.

Polishing isn't all that bad. My center grill was dull when it came with the plane but a little 0000 steel wool and buffing wheel work and you can see yourself now.

Hank I've got your email. I'll be in touch.

Now will he let us amateurs into his secret how that is done? My skullcap spinner & pressed grilles always corrode as soon as I've finished polishing them.

Rob I don't know what finishing process the bike shop uses but what you describe is a property of aluminum - it forms a monomolecular oxide layer when exposed to air that both protects and dulls it slightly.

If you apply the protective coating in any climate-controlled environment as soon as you're done polishing that will pretty much do it. A clear enamel finish like Rustoleum® Crystal Clear (Gloss), Val-Spar® Clear Exterior Spar Varnish or whatever equivalents are available there are some I would recommend. I have used these on new bare-metal tailwheel parts (both Al and steel) with good results. They seem to be as durable as any on the market. The important thing is to coat the parts quickly and with an inorganic compound that won't turn yellow with age. Older nitrocellulose spar varnishes will do that but not polyvinyl acrylics. Look for those using Acetone (or Toluene or Xylene) as solvent(s). That's usually a good indicator. (..Be sure to spray in a well-ventitated area & away from flames.)

I don't know how temperature affects this oxidation process- some oxides break down when heated while for other metals it speeds up the process... But may be worth looking into if you're out to win a prize. I am sure there are more tricks here than I know. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminu...and_refinement

Just more advice from an amatuer scientist...
