I have just removed the eiesman mags from my 85hp cont engine. I am not sure what they are worth. They have about 100 hours on them and have the proper paperwork to support the overhaul. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello akjack, can I ask why you removed them? Not running well?

Just wondering if I might be able to talk you out of them for a reasonable price and if they would fit my A-65-8, currently have a pair of disposable Slick boat anchors on it, excessive drop on the left. According to the interchange book, the A and C series Continentals used the same Eisemann mags. 530143 left side, 24739-A1 right side. Is that what you have?

The mags are type LA-4, the other numbers on them are the assembly number and the serial number.

The mags work well, I removed them because I have the short engine mount and they were touching the firewall. The new slicks that I put on give me 3/4 of an inch clearance.

While on the subject I'd like to ask if anyone knows if you can use any angled plugwire ends (distributor type) on an Eiseman instead of the small straight-in ones (the little brass U-shaped thingies).

          Thanks, Ron

Are eiesman mags pretty good? How old? Still made? Repairable? I'm looking at a T-craft Rebuilt by a pro in 1995,65hp 600 hrs SMOH (he did it) Battery (rechargeable) powers nav lights and radio, Very nice inside and out, painted ceconite, creme and red. Scheme is 1946 Deluxe. Wooden climb prop, solid tail wheel, very clean panel, leather seats, nice headliner, interior is very professional. All logs, and struts xrayed last year. Wheel Pants creme, red stripe. Aircraft has always been hangared since rebuilt except overnight at Sentimental Journey in Lock Haven, Pa. where it won first in class. This t-c has eiesman mags. (prop looks very nice.) Ok Gang....whats it worth? .....(.its a 46-BC12D) Comes with fresh annual. Attn: Pasture Pilot, its right near you!

              Re: eiesman mags

Jim i owned a Taylorcraft with eissman mags back in 1983. They were antiques then, and parts were hard to find. I did finaly get everything new at Fresno Air Parts, coils points rotors etc. They are a very good Mag if you can get parts, however i could not even play a car radio close to that plane. They are not a sheilded ignition. If you can find parts they are expensive. Hope this helps. Marv

Marv, yes it does help alot. I'm looking at a T-Craft that has them. The asking price is too much (in my humble estimation) especially since it has these mags instead of new or recent impulse slicks. Also has a solid tailwheel which is a bummer. JC

                  Re: eiesman mags

Don't discount the solid tail wheel. The Taylorcraft has a nice long tail moment and mine does great with a hard tire. Can't say how it will fly with the air tire since I haven't flown one but I understand it is heavier and that long tail moment will pull your CG aft. I HAVE flown a tail heavy Taylorcraft (don't EVER trust a W&B that shows the factory empty weight!) and it was, how do you describe it, SPRIGHTLY. Glad I never got it in a spin. It might not have recovered.
It was actually fun to fly and had nice sensitive controls. I did a CG check, but not realizing that it hadn't actually been weighed in over 30 years and wasn't using the real empty weight or CG was dangerous. Got a bit upset when I did a real W&B with the scales.
If you are buying, get a set of scales and a true MEASURED W&B as a part of the sale. You might be surprised (and the seller too).

Hank, mine had a scott 3200 and it was PERFECT! No vibration on rough field, turned on a dime, nice and easy to turn, etc. The cub had a solid tailwheel...AWFUL, lots of vibration, noise. JC

Eismann AM mags were not sheilded ,Eismann LA 4 mags are sheilded I would use good ones without any concern, Arn Air in Iowa will over haul them, they were a good mag in there time

I'm a relatively new T'craft owner. Mine has Eiseman mags (don't know what model). I don't hear a click when I turn it over, so I assume they don't use impulse coupling. But it's easy to start. From what I read, some models don't have impulse coupling. My question is, what if anything is used to adjust the timing for starting?

Pasture Pilot, if you decide to sell your boat anchor Slicks, let me know.

If there is no impulse then the mag is timed directly to the engine with no means to change the timing for starting. Just because you don't hear the click doesn't mean that there isn't an impulse. It could mean that the impulse is gummed up and not working. Over the last few years I have seen a few on which this was the case.

                              OLD THREAD ALERT!

                              Gerald:

Eismann mags are great, in my very humble opinion; I have several thousand hours flying Tcraft so equipped.

Don't throw them away or get a "Slick Quick Fix" hammer refund.

As 3Dreaming infers, they just need a bit of TLC every so often to keep them in tip top shape.

Timing to the engine is the same as any other magneto. Do you have shielded ignition?
