    Re: Engraved cockpit parts

All of the old photos I have seen show the wood grain. I don't know how good the quality was, but in the late 30s and early 40s it was very popular on all sorts of vehicles. I learned to do it by reading very old books showing techniques.

The modern techniques using those curved rubber wipers don't work worth a flip. I used wadded up cloth, feathers and all kinds of worn out brushes like the old books described. It's actually kind of fun, but the biggest help was when I made parts from real wood, stained them and then copied the grain.

Hardest part for me was getting the colors right.

Well here is where I will drift from a true restoration. Personaly I think the wood grain is UGLY. As to what I am going to do has not been addressed yet but it will be a blend of the best from the old and incorperate just enough modern to work well for me and my flying, which is off a grass field in the boonies. It is 50 miles in any direction to a tower controlled field and only about 5 miles to an uncontolled airspace or as close as it get anyway. (;f Larry

OK, while I am waiting to see if I am going to be unemployed because of the proposed elimination of manned space flight I am catching up on all the old threads I haven't answered questions on.

The 6K ROC was straightened out with Keystone. They had sent a 2K ROC to the Fighter Factory at SFQ (their restoration facility is within walking distance of my hangar). All I had to do was walk across the ramp and trade with them. If you think a 6K ROC is silly in a Taylorcraft imagine a 2K in a P-51! All straight now and both planes have the right instrument. Hey, it was a screw-up and it was made right. I think Keystone was great and we worked it out.

As to the engraved parts, there will be a compass Taylorcraft logo on the way to Carlton and Larry on Monday (OK, Monday is a Federal Holiday so it will actually go out Tuesday). Does anyone else want one?

                        Re: Engraved cockpit parts

Man, you guys timed this just right! I am going to the engraver TONIGHT to get some more made. I had 3 to send and lost one ( #*%#*%!).

I will get another run made and get him to cut the outside edge a little deeper to make them easier to cut out and file smooth. The first set were a little hard to file smooth since they are so small.

Anybody else want any? I will be asking him to do the other placards tonight and post pictures as he does them. He is about as fast as I am, so it will take a little while. They look great, just takes a long time for him to program in the engravings. Looks like the Compass logos will run about $10 with these new ones added in. The more he makes the less they cost each. If more are ordered I will drop the price.

                            Hank,

I used to fly 20 series Lears for a company based near you at Patrick Henry Field, now Williamsburg Int'l. They had a 6K ROC indicator in them. For grins & giggles we used to see who could keep it pegged the longest. We would hold 6K+ ROC to well over 20K feet. If the Taylorcraft cold do that, I bet a lot more guys would be trying to get one.

Did you work for the company there operating the Lears and the Swedish fighters for the Navy? It was always neat to see those planes going in and out. We did some test flights for the AGATE Project out of there too. Neat little (big) airport. Much better to fly out of than Norfolk Intl. on an airline. Of course for the Taylorcraft it is right at the LARGEST airport I want to go in and out of. If I have a choice, I would rather fly off of grass.
A bunch of us had a grass runway next to the pavement at SFQ. The airport wouldn't "officially sanction" landing on the grass so we used to walk it regularly to look for holes and hazards. Worked fine for us.
