  • Looking for prewar elevator and trim bab

I am going to change my trim tab to one in the elevator so I am starting to look for any and all the parts for it, the crank, shaft, elevator with trim tab. My elevator has the 3 hinges. Also looking for a prewar rudder, 3 hinge again. If anyone sees anything let me know please.

I have elevators but they don't have trim in them, I was just going to make the trim parts and weld them into one. A friend of mine sent me 3 new screws, he wants to sell them, they are not cheap though, machinists cost a fortune in Alaska. There are also a person who has extra pulleys on the website so you can ask if he has one. I can make a pattern or hank may already have one for the bell crank and other essentials. Let us know. Tim

Re: Looking for prewar elevator and trim bab

There were a few three hings elevators with tabs for he 41 Deluxe birds, but I think they are probably pretty rare. Easier to just weld the tab section of a two hinge into the trailing edge of a three tab hinge.

Personally I don't think I would change the plane from a separate tab to an elevator tab. The Taylorcraft didn't need that much trim force and I WOULD NOT want to argue with an FAA guy who thought he knew more than he did about a major change to the control system. I am betting he would demand a full DER analysis.

        Bird,

Like Hank said, the only pre-war three-hinge elevator with a trim tab was on the '41 Deluxe, making them pretty uncommon. The tab is different from the post-war or D model tab on the two-hinge elevators. If I were doing this, I would find a good two-hinge elevator and tab, which will be far more available, and convert it to a three-hinge to work on your pre-war stabilizer. As long as the trim system "repair" conforms to the TC, I don't see a problem. You are just changing the trim to an alternative system that was installed under the same TC, but your A&P/IA would have to concur.

Actually my bird was rebuilt back in the 40's with a 41 Deluxe plane. Think there was a accident or something-the history doesn't say why but it was written in log books, this is why I ended up with the 15 rib wings and the leather covered yokes among other things.
I am thinking that I will have to go the route of the 2 hinge that people are mentioning, also thinking of just making the change to the elevator itself-just cut the area out and weld some Piper channel in for the stab area.

Michael, how would you feel about just going to a replacement stab and elevator with two hinges and already set up for the elevator trim tab? We aren't that far apart and I would be good with an even trade for the old pre-war pieces to use on Josh's plane in exchange for the post war tail and trim system.

I may have an elevator, but you will have to build a trim tab and rod. Those are very hard to find.

That is a deal, you would need new wires from univair but its your best option. Tim

Except that if I recall, the pre-war and post-war stabilizer attach bolts/holes are 90* to each other? still easier to add a hinge to post-war or D elevator to fit a pre-war stab I think.

Re: Looking for prewar elevator and trim bab

Here are some photos of the stabs and elevators. The attach holes are vertical on these and they are complete, covered and have all the trim parts in them. There is a small tear where the bellcrank cotter key has hit the fabric, but there is actually supposed to be an access cover there (I have the pattern) so it will not need to be repaired, just add the access cover.

Looks to me to be an easy way to get to where you want to be with all stock parts. You WILL need to add the front crank support bracket (I may have one on one of the wreck fuselages, but forgot to check, if not I can make you a drawing from my 45). The crank is available and was a common window winder crank (I should also have one of them). The only parts I don't remember seeing are the front pulley and the shaft. I have all the drawings for the trim indicator and have made several of them in the past. Very simple.

                    Hank

Changing from horizontal to vert holes is fairly easy, just DO NOT put two sets of holes in!

Seems we have a problem with attachments. One more time.

I give up! It is the small dark line ahead of the trim tab rod in the second photo. It could be fixed with a silver dollar patch.

Can't use 2 hinge stab with 3 hinge vertical. tail wires won't work.
