Map Box Doors

Hi All
I had to order material to make map box doors for CF-CLR so I built a few extra.

There is no certification but they are fabricated from 6061-T6, MS2057-4 hinge, AD-4 rivets and carbon steel springs. The handles are authentic 1940s chevy.

From the photos you'll see the hinges are formed so that the door covers the entire opening in the panel, and the hinges are configured in such a way that they are tucked away a little for a tidy appearance. The carbon steel springs are wound so the coil tightens (diameter decreases) as the door opens for smooth operation.

Dimensions are 63/4"x 53/8" x 1/4'

$50 each $95 for a pair.

Wow, those are nice. I made mine from aluminum too but I had trouble forming the corners. Yours came out really nice! Also I cast my own handles from the one good one I had. Where in the world did you find those originals?!?!?!?

It was a LOT of work to make an old handle good enough to make a mold and then cast copies (the mold was only good for a few copies and then a new mold was needed). For $14 each I would have BOUGHT them and not made them!

I had already made new ones as OPPs. It was just way more work than it was worth, plus the casting resin isn't the correct original color and had to be painted. As anal as I am I will probably buy new ones any way. ;-)

No idea how I missed the prior thread for the handles. Maybe I didn't and have just forgotten. Seems to happen more often the older I get.

Hello,

Does anyone know what did the factory did for color? Leave them as molded or paint?

I have an original on the LH box door painted silver and a chromed plastic on the RH door, see photo. Similar but not the same as an original, it was likely replaced when an Airboy was removed for the last time. Unfortunately I have no sourcing info on that handle.

Pre war most were wood grain painted. Not sure what was original in 46 but would like to know if someone knows for sure on the 45 Deluxe.

Yes, I know that isn't the correct ROC. That one was from a WW-II fighter. How about a T that can climb at 6,000 feet per minute!!!! Keystone sent me the Fighter Factory ROC and sent them mine by accident. Lucky we are on the same field. I just walked over and we traded them back.

The old original ones I have seen were the natural color of the plastic and were NOT painted. The painted ones I have seen were generally repaired and painted to make them look nice again. The original was kind of ivory colored and slightly translucent. VERY nice looking if never exposed to the sun. The best set I have ever seen were matched by the sub panel knobs and the Throttle ball. All matched and looked GREAT as a set.

Mark, your right-hand glove box door handle with the small vertical ridges is the same one used on the '41 Deluxe. Are you positive its chromed plastic? I'm pretty sure the '41s were stamped metal and probably nickel plated. (Hank will be doubly annoyed that he replicated incorrect handles for a Deluxe ) Might have also been used on a few post-war airplanes. I've seen the plastic handles referenced in the OP in ivory and I think gray, don't believe the factory painted them but many owners may have over the years.
