  • Wheel pant brackets

Hi guys I was just given An original set of wheel pants. They are missing the brackets. Anybody have a set?

    Thanks

    Ryan,

I was in the same boat last spring. I found new manufactured (not cast) mounting hardware from Wag-Aero. They are pma'd and look pretty good.

      Re: Wheel pant brackets

      Ryan,
The original brackets were cast and have a reputation for cracking. There are welded ones that are much stronger (but honestly look like C**P!). I have a set of each and intend to one day make up a set of welded brackets and cast them INTO a set that are shaped like the cast ones (using resin for the casting).
If a cast bracket cracks and lets go you could end up trying to land on an up-side-down wheel pant! One good reason I DO NOT fly with my wheel pants on. The welded brackets are on my 41 now and are as strong as you could ask for. I actually use them to jack my plane and they work great.

Anyone interested in helping make some composite brackets? (metal in resin)

The reason they suck is they are sand cast. I would like to try CNC or 3d printing a set.

            Re: Wheel pant brackets

Good question Ryan, I've been thinking about that myself. Wag is a short flight for me so I can stop in and take a look at those that Greg pointed out.

I have three sets of the cast brackets, but every one of the left side brackets are broken or cracked. Someone bonded and screwed on a .90th steel plate to one working set that I don't really want to use. The plates are counter sunk on the pant attach side to use flat head screws and hold the casting to the plate, so the plate screws to the bracket (new holes), and the hardware goes through the bracket, plate, and wheel pant. (maybe a picture is a better explanation...)

My 46 BC12D-1 had a set of wheel pant brakets like that 35 years ago.

I know pre war was cast, but I think post war was welded. Just like the ones Ryan picked up from WagAero.
