Does anybody have an older EBC 102a (121.5 only) ELT they would want to get rid of? Mine wasn't working properly at last annual and I would prefer to replace as cheaply as possible. Battery tested out fine, so I'm looking to replace the transmitter.

However, I would like to eventually take a trip to Canada and understand they require more modern elt's. If anyone has any experience with Canadian Elt requirements, your input would be appreciated.

    Thanks

My mechanic had two of them listed in his hanger sale for $20 ea. Still looking?

Sorry for the delayed response but yes, I'm still looking.

Can you pass along my phone or e-mail if your mechanic still has these? [email protected] 651-587-6854

      Thanks, matt

        Re: Elt

I thought 121.5 only ELTs were now banned under ICAO? They have to be 243 MHz compatible.

The reason being the satellites have stopped listening to 121.5; only the SAR crew have that listening ability.

I'd be happily stood corrected if this isn't the case in FAA land, but certainly in EASA land you cannot have them. Can you check out the Canadian regs?

            Re: Elt

They ARE legal in the US (121.5), but it is also true the satellites no longer monitor them. Personally, I will use what is MANDATORY and get a "SPOT" for actual safety. We made a proposal in the NASA AGATE project that could have provided better safety for lower cost, but it was turned down in favor of the expensive 243 MHz system. Go figure government.

On a side note, have you ever read the NTSB reports on aircraft crashes? Read the part of 'ELT Activated?'. Though I don't look at all of them I have never found one where it was activated. ELT requirements were a knee jerk reaction by politicians when one of their own went down and died.

Forgot to add, I carry a PLB here in the flatlands of the U.S.

Yes. Many of us have maintained the 121.5 MHz units and supplemented it with the Spot, Inreach, Spidertracks, PLB, sat phone, etc.

Geez, Tim. Your killin' me. Funny that EBC is still producing the EBC102A.

I bet someone will be looking at soldering the AA batteries together and using some home depot airplane parts silicone to pot them together...

Not a problem for my ACK E-01. Couple of packs of Duracell Copper Tops and I'm good to go.

Have you check the plastic body for cracks around the mount screws yet between the body halves? I used to sell airplane parts and both the ACK and the Ameriking were cracking during manufacturing and we had them sitting on the shelf....till someone brought back one that was never installed and we checked all of the rest of them...not a one was good. It was bad QC by both manufacturers. I dropped a grand on my EBC 406 last summer, I may build a new billet mount later this summer...Tim
