Without engineering substantiation, I think you will have a hard time getting an owner produced part approved using material different from the original,

Lucky for me I are one of them there engineers! So far not too many problems on anything I have done, but I go for making parts to original specs whenever I have to (and can get the specs).
Reverse engineering is part and parcel of what I have done for around 40 years and my IA knows I am anal about safety and originality.

The results are in.

The welder that my IA and others recomended, did a fantastic job. After completing the welding, he took the part and got it inspected [xray or xxxx ?] and it passed. As he said, this was the weakest point for some years until it broke. Now the whole piece is sturdy and should provide many more years of service. Below are a few pictures before the paint job. He also welded and re-drilled the attachment holes. Installed it this week end and test it for 12 landings on grass and pavement. It tracks straight. Very happy with the results.

Part II:

In the future, he advised, that I could get the cast aluminum rudder horn from Wag or xxx and weld an AL stem extension with 3 or 4 dowels installed on the longitudinal axis to stop any rotation of the weld extension.

IAs may have an issue with this "owner made" part..... which may be another discussion for the Forum.

What was the total cost of repair?

Second question is this; Now knowing the repair cost what would you have been willing to pay for used serviceable exact replacement part?

For a used serviceable part... no more than $ 50. Do you have one for sale...just in case this one does not make it?

I could had gone down easy street and purchased the Wag arm, dril one hole, lathed it to size and install it. Would it work....very posible....how long...who knows, but I see many planes with a single hole holding the arm in place. With time, that hole may get elongated and then.... drill a bigger hole and/or place an oversize tube into the bottomsection of the rudder for reinforment.... etc...

The 46' Cubs as well as the Legend Cubs have single bolt attaching the arm. Actually the Legend's rudder arm is made by AVOX in cast aluminum....never hear of them before.

BTW, do you who has a 337 for the 800x6? Looking for one.

Checked with the welder regarding the cost of welding a stem extension with dowels and lathed the stem extension to fit into the rudder tube. He said that the first one he does will dictate the cost, basically depending on the time and effort involved to do it. He guestimated some $ 100 to $ 150 plus some more for the piece of cast aluminum he uses. Since the price of a piece of cast aluminum can vary depending on different factors such as the metal components used in the casting of the tube, he guestimates some $ 10 - $20 for the stem. So, in summary, some $ 120 to $ 170 for the welders work plus the rudder arm from Wag or xxx for $ 40 + shpg, say $ 45, the total cost on the high side would be around $ 230.

Then the fun begins with the paperwork for the "owner produced" part for a part not longer made or suitable replacement part not availalble.

Yes I have a few of them, both aluminum and steel.

Guess I will round them up and put them all in one box.
