Re: Any old Eisman or Bendix Mags laying around?

    Tim:

Aircraft Magneto Service has rebuilt Bendix S4RN-20 & -21 for $1,250 and $ 1,100 outright. They also have the S-20 for the C-85. Very knowledgeable people. They also do the 500 Hr inspection, O/H and inspection. Phone 206-219-0077.

See my next post below. I attached a copy of their web page for reference.

    Hope this helps

Re: Any old Eisman or Bendix Mags laying around?

      Saga Update:

1- The Slicks # 4230 are not approved to be used on a A-65/A-75, there are approved for the C-75, C-85, C-90 -8.
2- The # 4230 (from the 90s as I understand), was replaced by the #4233 and then by # 4301/4333/4330..
      3- Currently, the Slick # 4302 and # 4333 are approved for the A-65/A-75.
4- TCM ignition system # 10-400458 or 459 (Kit) are approved for the A-65/A-75 or individually as Left Magneto type S4RSC-21 part # 10-500514-3 and Right magneto type S4RSC-204 or -21 part # 10/600644-3 (for the -204) or 10-500514-3 (for the -21). Harness part No. 10-821471-3

We also learned that even though the slick magneto # 4320 can be bolted on and used on a A-65, this magneto is not approved to be used on certified planes. So it is good for experimental aircraft only ( per Unison-TCM). No reason why (?).

In my case, we have decided to sell the slicks # 4230 "as removed" . Will keep the gears. Any body interested, PM me to discuss.

The next decision is : either Bendix or Slicks.

ACS and Chief sell rebuilt Bendix as well as Aircraft Magneto Service (they might be others that also sell them, but these were the ones we contacted) . Kelly Aerospace does the rebuilding on the Bendix and then sold thru ACS (Chief ?).

So, I am still looking for cores for trade-in !!

Thanks to all and stay tune for the next episode

Go to Fresno Airparts and buy a set of two overhauled bendix mags with wires and plugs for about $750

          Thanks Dave.

Do they come ready to bolt on or I need to buy spacers and gears ?

          Thanks

Re: Any old Eisman or Bendix Mags laying around?

in your case you have to buy that stuff but he has all that, will raise the price a couple hundred bucks and he expects a core, if you don't have a core it adds a little bit, $50 I think

            overall its a good price

              Dave:

I just talked with them. They only carry the "mailbox" Bendix. He suggested Skyranch for the S4. Will call and find out.

              Thanks

                  Dave :

VA Fly-in is Saturday May 04 and Sunday May 05. I'm planning to go on Saturday, if I can get this mag issue resolved by then.

Re: Any old Eisman or Bendix Mags laying around?

I called Aircraft Magneto service, there are no S20 series 10-51360-27/28 mags in stock in the country. That advertisement is in the event that if they ever do get one in as a core, they will rebuild and sell them. You will find the same problem with spruce, chief, or any other overhauler. Your only option is the slicks if you want new mags. You might find NEW tcm mags but they are several grand each...Tim

                      Tim:

You are correct. So far, no luck on finding Bendix. A few Eismans ..pretty banged up...needing O/H for top $$$ ...... a few friends going to SnF; they will be in the look out for cores and bendix.... will see what they find.

Checked TCM and they are more expensive than Slicks. They are "the new crop" as I was told by them..... whatever that means... new technology(?) .....but they would need some 5 years to prove themselves and we could draw conclusions and comparisons then.

It appears at this time, that Slick has the market.

Still grounded... and looking for cores .....in case I decide to bite the bullet and get the Slick kit.

Thanks to all fer the help

Re: Any old Eisman or Bendix Mags laying around?

The only acceptable cores are bendix/scintilla mags. Eisman's are the predecessor to slicks and are not eligible as a core. If you find a set of lycoming mags, you can get someone to build them into mags for a -8 continental, you need new magnets, and the correct impulse couplings and gears. They would get the correct data plates that identify them as 10-51360-27/28 Tim

What did TCM want for their new mags?

Case magnetos are the predecessor to the slicks, not Eisemanns.

If anyone is really interested in the lunch box Bendix SF4 type mags I have a box of parts, probably enough to build two or three mags. Also in the box are what looks like several Eisemann coils. I would sell or trade for Tcraft or small Continental parts. If there is an interest I'll take some pictures and post them.

Re: Any old Eisman or Bendix Mags laying around?

Just got down to the overhaul shop to pick up my repaired Eisemann Mag and we were flipping the impulse around checking for how hot the spark was when the coupling jammed. Looked like the gear nut wasn't tight and allowed one of the pawls to snag. When we tightened the nut the shaft stripped on the drive gear end.

Long story short, my freshly repaired mag is kind of useless. I am looking for Eisemann parts for the AM-4 or the LA-4 for a 65 hp Continental. Anybody have any old Eisemanns or parts from them, especially the rotating magnet?

                            Hank

Also could be interested in ANY old AM-4s or LA-4s to part out.

Try Fresno, Hank, they have a lot of NOS parts. Certainly the rotating magnet.

Unfortunately the most recent Fresno add listed no Eisemann parts at all. Probably won't be able to call them till Monday, but I have a BAD feeling they don't carry them anymore. The parts have been getting pretty scarce. One reason I was looking to gather as many old parts as I can to keep the ones still out there alive.

If anyone out there has one they are looking to turn in as a core on another type, PLEASE DON'T! We will find you a junk core. Most rebuilders just destroy old Eisemanns.
