  • Aircraft Spruce Seat Sling Problem - Your Opinion

    Hi all,

I got around to trying to install my new Aircraft Spruce Seat Sling recently. It differs in that the top part of the sling has a second piece sewed to the back, as opposed to the old one I removed which was one long piece of canvas that you would lace to the top bar.

As you can see in the photos, the first one is the finished, top, side. The second photo is the unfinished, bottom, side.

I ran into the problem at the top cross bar. Note how the one piece front is notched out for the bars that come up to the top cross bar. Note on the back is sewed the one long piece without notches. To install this I would have it install it upside down, with the unfinished seams showing and the finished seams facing the bottom of the airplane. I would believe the notched part would have to be on the back, or bottom unfinished side, so it can come up around those two reinforcement bars that attach to the top bar. The large one-piece shouldn't have the cutouts so it can wrap up and over the cross bar. Am I missing something here?

I called Aircraft Spruce and spoke with their sewing department. The person who makes these is in the hospital. They want me to send it back, along with pictures, to show them what the problem is. For an item that costs over $145 I would like one that is sewed correctly. Your thoughts, especially anyone who has installed one of these.

Mine looks like the aircraft spruce sling. I slide the top part between the bar and the baggage compartment and then over to lace to the second row. The cut outs allow for the bars.

Just got off the phone with Tom, and he explained how it should work. The straight piece with the eyelets won't get close to the crossbar's reinforcement bars on the back, there will be an angle there to the bottom bar. I now understand how this should go, now to see if I can do it on the first try.

Take pictures! If it confused you, it will confuse others.

Clearly that person is in the hospital for some nervous system condition! By the looks of the placement of those grommets they were twitching worse than an alcoholic with a nasty case of delrium tremens!

How hard is it to punch grommets through canvas in a straight line??

              Hank,

I think I have it figured out, I will let you know. If I remember to take a few pictures, I will.

              DJ,

It looks like that because of the wrinkles when I laid it out. It is actually quite nice in-person. Way, way over-priced but nice.

The top piece wraps over the front, and the way the sling angles foward, it allows the notches in the top to pass around the bars. it looks fine to me as well

Thanks, Mike. That's what Tom said, too.
