  • Control colum position

I am making new elevator cables and need to know where to position the a frame while elevators are level. Rigging instructions only deal with wing wash and control travels. The old cables are not available. I would assume somewhere near center, but a dimension from firewall would be good. Thanks !

Mine ended up about 4" from the instrument panel to the front of the control yokes.

I centered the control yoke and connected the cables to the neutral elevator. I ended up close to the end of travel on both the up and down stops.

There is more than enough travel in the control yoke so if you want to have the wheels closer to the panel to, for example provide more beer belly clearance ( hehe) you have some tolerance.

There's also a rubber stop that attaches to the right side diagonal fuselage tube. You can adjust it by moving it up (yoke will travel further forward) or down ( yoke stops further aft). The 'H' frame should contact this stop when the control surface is against the nose down stop.

You don't necessarily need to have it neutral to make the cables, just make sure the "H" column and the elevators are in the same position. Column forward down elevator. IIRC the cables will be the tightest in the neutral position. Also make the cables with the maximum amount of length in the turn buckles to take up slack after the cables stretch. Also if something winds up not being just right on the length you can make new links for the attachment on the elevator horn to adjust the length to get the correct adjustment.

Thanks guys. I put the column forward against the stop and made the cables with down elevator. It looks about right. I set the turn buckles midway which may be a mistake, but seems to have plenty of adjustment left for stretch. As you stated I can always make new (shorter) links.

Note that the links on the elevator cables are specific parts (not just bar stock) that incorporate the correct spacing for the elevator control horns.

The project I bought to build my clip wing had those. This one had some flat stock with washers stacked on both sides. I made some from .125 4130 stock, stacked large area washers and edge welded them to the strap. Looks like tha originals
