  • Changing tire for newbie

Newbie for a fabric airplane with bungee chords of course... I have my share of changing tires on a Cessna 172 and lately on Boeing 737's and 777's as an A&P mechanic for an airline company.
I looked everywhere and not a single helpful video/diagram.
Where are the hoisting points? I noticed the support for the wheel pants are bent so I suspect someone tried there when it was under the previous ownership.

I use an engine hoist lifting from where the motor mount attaches at the firewall.

The difficulty is getting the tire and one side of the aircraft off the ground, I place a 2x4 long enough to go between the two bottom points where the gear is welded to the axel and lift with a small wheeled jack, works fine would be helpful to notch out a small 1/2 inch cut out in the 2x4 where it sits on the axel point.to seat the 2x4

        Hi Marc,

Get a small scissor car jack from Harbor Freight or Amazon. One with a pad that has some ears or is grooved/cupped. It goes under the inner gear leg wheel pant mount or axle weldment.
Sometimes they are called a trailer leveling scissor jack. Can be found in the car junkyards too, get them out of the smaller Euro or Japanese cars otherwise they can be too big for the task at hand.

Chock the other wheel and tailwheel.

        Works fine, Mark

Get a piece of 6 x 6 to set the axle on - pull the cotter pin - loosen the axle nut - get a buddy to lift the wing at the lift strut attach points - remove wheel - set axle on 6 x 6. Install is reverse.
