  • B-80 Tube Tie Rod at Lift Strut Fitting Length?

    Team,

Anyone have the "correct" length measurements for the B-80 Tube Tie Rode at Lift Strut Fitting? I have several from a couple of disassembled wing sets and they range in length from 30 1/64" to 30 1/16". Checking to see if situation is simply due to manufacturing tolerances or is these are "file to fit" upon installation. Also, as there are shims on the internal wing drag strut installation, can someone provide the main spare to aft spar centerline-to-centerline spacing dimension.

    Many thanks.

Measure the wing attach fittings on YOUR fuselage and get the center to center, then make the wing spars match. It could be slightly different side to side. Shim the compression struts as needed. I have heard that the tolerance is plus or minus 1/8"

I agree with 3Dreaming above. When I dismantled & later rebuilt my wings, I had to go back to first principles for all the compression strut lengths (I assume that's what you mean, MBednarek?)
Shim as required to get the spars trammelled.

Attached is a photo of the types of compression strut shims I came across during my wing rebuild. Quite why they are different I never learned.
      Hope that helps.

Or do you mean the threaded rod that passes through the tube at the strut/spar fittings? If so, the whole thing could be threaded. Structural strength would be the same.

I'm familiar with trameling and can accomplish the spar spacing measurements off the fuselage spar attach fittings (I got spoiled having factory drawings on my Aeronca K other project). As there are no shims at the strut attach fittings, it looks like I'll need to "adjust" the B-80 length to fit.
