  • Pics of Drude's landing gear fixture are here

Thought I'd start a new topic instead of burying it in another thread.

Is this the same fixtures that were scrapped or do they still exist?

      Hank,

I believe those are the ones that were scrapped. Discussed on the bad gear legs thread.
      Cheers,

Gary, thanks for finding, I was unable.

They were scrapped after being advertised on this site for many weeks and last chance warnings given.

I moved and there was no place for these and other parts that I got rid of.

I believe that I made it clear that the price was one that you could not refuse (free).

          David,

You were very nice in offering these and as is typical, no one jumped on them. Well, at least no one that was close to you. It was just unfortunate circumstances. I have no skill when it comes to this kind of stuff like you do, they would have been a big paperweight for me. You should harbor not a bit of guilt for scrapping them. Hope you are doing well!

You did what you had to do, Dave. You gave plenty of notice. I'd have loved to have them, but we're on opposite ends of a big country! I'll see if I can generate some this winter in my spare time, among the other projects going on.

Keep checking those drain holes for corrosion

Agree, you gave plenty of notice and we actually had time, we just couldn't get a way to transport them. Looking back I wish we would have just rented a storage space there. It would have been worth it till we could figure out a way to move them. We all live and learn.

                    John,

I recall that one of the unexpected issues with repairing them was that sometimes the I.D. of the tapered axle was badly pitted and corroded.

Perhaps having a machined part to slide inside and weld in place is a good reinforcement remedy.

Additionally having a piece that I could anchor to the ground and use as a base while I pulled the landing gear frame into shape was a big plus.

Initially I used a come along to pull but changed to a port-a-power style hydraulic puller because in order to release the come along I had to advance it one more click thereby pulling the frame more than I had intended.

I have enough steel to build a jig and a few spare gear legs, my issue is a lack of a good local welder to make it happen on my end. I would also consider conversion to straight axles. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Tim

I would think you could make a plate that would handle both taper and straight axle... or maybe have a bushing or cradle of some sort that would adapt the taper? I don't think the welding should be that big of a deal.

Both Grove, Atlee Dodge (or at least Atlee used to), and C.A.P. Terry Bowden (for his Grove wheel package) Click image for larger version

ID:	189444 offer tapered straight axle adapters. A couple of them could be used to form a fixture for both tapered and straight axles - assuming the adapters are similar to the newer fixed 1 1/2" axles. I have them bolted to my gear flanges for Grove wheels and Aero skis. They just slide over the tapered axle.
