starter

I am adding a start to my c90. It is the old style pull starter. I can't find any info on wiring it. What i really need to know is if I need is can I just run a hot wire from the battery or do I need to put a relay on the master switch? Right now the only thing running off the master is lights.

I looked in the a.c. 43.13 and can t find any info.

Hi Reuben,

Attached is what the DER approved for my c-90.

Somewhere in title 14 and CAR4 it defines this but I can't find it tonight.

Obviously you don't have a push button the the master is the issue.

MASTER SWITCH
§ 3.688 Arrangement. If electrical
equipment is installed, a master switch
arrangement shall be provided which will
disconnect all sources of electrical power from
the main distribution system at a point adjacent
to the power sources.

§ 4a.579 Master switch. Electrical installations
shall incorporate a master switch easily accessible to
a member of the crew.

You should not need a separate relay for the starter since the whole point of the manual contactor is to do away with the need for an electrical contactor. If you consider the extreme case of a battery and starter only, i.e. no lights, radio or generator, all you should need is a fat wire to the starter. You have a positive shutoff via the push-pull contactor - No electrical drain except when starter is engaged. For substantiation find a wiring diagram for a C-120/140 or something else that left the factory with a C-90 and the push-pull starter.

Perhaps the word "adjacent" in CAR3.688 may be an important part of the discussion?

How far away is the relay from the batt?

The Aeronca 7EC schematic shows a pull to start set up with a master switch/relay between batt and starter.

Do what you like just offering info to help.

It's my choice but having an always hot long wire in the cockpit or engine area isn't what I want. A solenoid or mechanical switch next to the battery seems safer especially of someone gets to fussing around with conductive tools or whatever nearby.

I burned my wristwatch (a Timex so kept on ticking) to my skin in auto voc school 53 years ago when removing the hot lead from a starter (left the hot battery end and ground connected like an idiot). Still have memories of the sight, sound, and smell as I wrestled the hot metal watch band off the "welder".

The Aeronca master relay is mounted on the firewall but the battery is on the other side of the firewall and about 18" away.

It doesen't really seem that smart does it?

It was that way and I left it so but now thinking that a relay move making it closer to batt might be smarter.

p.s. oh yeah almost forgot. I did similar and burnt my class ring, melted the emblem right off and I can hardly believe I pulled the ring off with my other hand while it seared my finger 50 years ago!

This is off the original topic, but has any one heard or know of any developments of a starter for out Taylorcrafts with the Continental A65 8F, been hoping for a long time.

There is the Hamp starter, but you have to butcher up the nose bowl.

Do a search for Hamp SafeStart, several threads on here in the past. Its an STC to mount a cordless drill under the cowling with a drive gear protruding through the nose bowl to engage a ring gear bolted behind the prop....

They seem to work but the one I saw looked like it was built by Fred Flintstone and REALLY butchered the cowl nose bowl.
