  • Lycoming O-145 Parts

Anybody sitting on, or have a source for Lycoming O-145 parts? Particularly the head gaskets and pushrod tube seals. Anybody have any experience making these from automotive parts?

Search this site using the search tool. Few years ago someone figured out what copper gasket could replace the head gasket. I think it was an AN part.

Check the size you need. The numbers are AN900-XX or the MS35769-XX. The MS35769 rings are available in the -92 size,4" ID with a 4 1/4" OD. Any larger might need a special order.
Make the special wrenches you need to keep the head nuts tight. Check them at each 20hrs or Annual. If you want to keep running this engine you're going to have to get creative with finding the parts.

You might check with JP Hackenberg for parts.

I have been able to get ahold of Hackenburg (nervous to hear what they charge). It seems the AN900-60 and MS35769-88 are also unavailable. I tried the Toyota Forerunner headgasket as I read about on another forum. It fits but is too thin.

Have a soft sold copper sheet of the right thickness water jetted out, that is what they do on certain race cars, the you have to get a piece of stainless wire to use as a fire ring by placing it inside of the copper hole if you want to use it as a head gasket. Tim

Each cyl takes 2 alum head gaskets & 1 fire ring. it will not work with 1 copper head gasket or a solid copper fire ring as the ring is a crush gasket. I've seen people try both these & they never last. The 2 alum head gaskets move against each other because the head expands much faster than the cast iron cylinder made 1 pc with the case. I never had a head bolt loosen. If people read the instuctions to support the exhaust & adjust the solid lifters every 100 hours or at annual you'll have no problem with this engines.

ok, but they still can be made if someone has the dimensions. We have a 70 ton mechanical punch press at work that could build a lifetime supply in about an hour....once you have the tooling

Are you talking fire rings or head gaskets? Yes alum head gaskets but fire rings are copper wrapped asbestos made to crush. I have 3 punch presses, an ironworker & 2 complete machines shops I'm selling also.

A suggestion, if you didn't want to make one at a fab shop is a gasket company named Cometic

Work with Cometics in-house engineer team to design and develop a gasket that will fit your specific applications needs. Simply fill out the custom gasket form and our technical sales team will contact you directly and, together, create a solution specifically tailored to your project.

I belong to a Buick club and some of the members have used them. Can't hurt to call as they may have something better or can make up the equal to the OEM "stack" as owner produced part.

I hope I didn't come off as rude as I didn't mean to but I have several hundred hours behind these little orphaned engines & they are fine smooth running, long lasting engines if you treat them as intended. Asbestos moratorium is over & can be used as long as it's encapsulated so having them made is a viable idea. Good Luck!

Excellent information Eric. Since you have considerable experience with the Lycoming, what do you gap your plugs at, and what oil are you running? I would be interest in any 145 parts in good shape.
                            Thanks, Larry

I have a O-145-A2, ser#129, date of manufacture 4-1940. 55hp@2550, TT1349.4--SMOH696.0hrs. Bendix sf4 mags with new coils at 681.0 hrs smoh. A few gaskets and a book on engine. Also have a home made beading tool to swedge the exhaust stubs in the heads. Have the log books also. Make me a offer if interested. I live 40 mile south of Toledo, Ohio at Findlay. I could bring it to OSH in July or you can pick up here. Last I looked at the cam it was good shape. Weak spot on these engines. How ever that was about 15 years ago when I was still flying it. It was pickled and been sitting since.
