  • Amelia is back home!

About 8 years ago I made a mistake and sold N43740, a certified Swick powered by a little O-200. My daughter cried as she watched it disappear as the new owners left. Well, yesterday at around 1530 I rolled her back into my hangar for good. She isn't quite as shiny but has just as much personality and character. WInds were gusting to 18 but I couldn't resist. It took me all of 5 minutes to get upside down. I flew over to the local high school where my daughter was having soccer practice, got a legal distance up and away and proceeded to wring it out. This plane is like an old pair of jeans- it just fits.

Its good to have it back and it looks awfully cool sitting in the hangar next to my Pitts.

That is great news, Eric. Now I want mine done quickly. We can fly some formation with low power clip wings. We can get out near Asheboro and give them an airshow.

Ok, I gotta know; what is her max cruise speed. I suspect mine will be close even though I only have a C-90. Who knows, I may decide to fly to Sun-N-Fun someday.

        See ya,

Forrest- I remember the day Liesa Marie came back to Alliance. You were like a kid at Christmas. It's funny how these machines become part of our DNA. When my clipwing got here I closed the hangar door and just walked around it, looking at it, smelling the familiar smells. I really missed it.

It has the wrong prop on it now and can not rev up like it needs to. It used to run around 110 at 2400, 125-130 flat out at 2750+ rpm. I plan to have the prop pitched back to where it needs to be next week. Right now the most I can get in straight and level WOT is around 2550 rpm. For an O-200 low revs are a recipe for no power. I plan to pitch it so redline is slightly exceeded if you run it wide open. I'll post speeds and climb info as soon as possible.

The past owners added radio and transponder which will be removed this weekend, already moved the stick to the middle and plan to move the throttle over to the left where I had it before.

I plan to take it down in a few years (5 or more) and totally restore it but for now- flying sure is sweet.
            Eric

I'd love to get together and get a group to go to alliance this year. Maybe HAl and Jim and all us local guys here?

CONGRATULATIONS ! I wish I had 94984 back. NOW my wife decides its ok for my son to learn to fly. O well some things just ment to be. Working on the Clip in regular fashion (and enjoying it greatly) and looking at something to put him in to learn. Currently finalizing a deal to buy out two members of a part of four to purchase half a Cessna 140 and have the remaining two partners move it to my hanger over at Owens Field (Columbia Downtown) while he still atttends U OF SC. He wants to take lessons this summer. YES lets plan on ALLIANCE !

              Congratulations AGAIN

Hal I have a C-85 that will be using the stroker mod. I an curious too about cruise , best props etc

                Re: Amelia is back home!

I have a 74-47 on it and it is WAY too much pitch. I tried a 74-41 today and wow did that make a big difference. I get off the ground very quick but top speed suffered. At 2500 rpm I was indicating 100 mph. My ASI may be off- haven't checked it with a GPS yet.

Did some acro with the 74-41 and it seems to be a great combo if you do not mind seeing 3000 rpm on the downlines. I did some 90 degree figure 8's and at full power was able to maintain 100 mph, 2800 rpm and a constant 3.5G in the turns. I'm thinking the best match may well be a 74-43 for a Stock O-200. I'd love to try the old Cessna 150 climb prop (69-47 I think) just to see if it goes a little faster without revving so much.

WOT with the 74-41 yielded 2900 RPM and 115 mph. I looped it several times from level flight and could get a nice round competition style loop. Could also get a 1/2 roll on a upline and still have enough to hammer out. Diving to 125 made it even easier.

My engine mount rubbers are very worn and the engine is sagging a bit. I think that replacing those at annual in a few weeks may get the angle of incindence such that it speeds it up a bit.

Anyway- there are 2 data points for you guys to evaluate.

Sensenich should soon have a 76" composite ground adjustable that will work on the little continentals.

I wish they would STC that but I bet they stick to experimental for now. I have flown one on a Cub Crafters Sport Cub and was not very impressed. Could have been the guy flying though.

What kind of performance did you guys get on the Clipwing you did (in your avatar?) Seems he called me asking what I was using and he had a 69-50 Cessna 150 prop.

I guess it is the age old problem- I want awesome climb and really good cruise. . . . . . everything is a compromise.

He is using the McCauley 69x50. He tried the prop you recomended from Sensenich 76AK-2-43. It was heavier, didn't spool up as quick, more gyroscopic forces, and didn't perform any better. It only got run 5-10 hours.

I have a 74-45 that is still in the Over Haul wrapper. I wonder if and how it would work on a stroked 85 ?

Jim- 74-45 will be too much pitch for the 85 stroker. 74-41 is the secret for that engine per Don.

Anyone close to Burlington NC have a 69-48 to 50 I could try? I would like a comparison before I repitch my 74-47 way down.

Tom- What speeds are you getting with that prop? Cruise and WOT? RPM?

Eric, it has been a while since I have flown the airplane, If I remember correctly it will turn 2500 on climb out, and about 2700 WOT, which is above redline for the C-90. IAS is about 120 at WOT. I'll try to verify these number by flying the airplane again or asking Kevin. Tom
