Re: Slick mag plug harness rubbing up against the firewall.
I just bought a Pmag. After talking with Brad at emagair.com I ordered an electronic mag to replace the impulse slick mag up against the firewall. The Pmag will allow me to separate the coil off the "head" of the mag and mount it lower down on the firewall thus giving me clearance. And as a side benefit I can run autoplugs on the bottom of the jugs, get a smoother idle, hotter spark, easier starting.
Thanks for all the ideas. No nylocs on the engine mount. But there are some other nylocs around in the engine bay.

Re: Slick mag plug harness rubbing up against the firewall.
Thanks for the input. I got busy, and not able to work on the plane for a bit, hopefully sooner than later.
Yes, I will check and see if the nuts are nyloc. I noticed all the washers stacked. I guess that would make it easy to put some on the other side. But the problem is the center support bolts in shear.
Yes the plane climbs good. You can put the power in, hold the brakes, and get the tail off the ground before you start your roll. And it sinks good too when you cut the power because the wing is 10' shorterI would really like to see what the power on short field landing would be like with a full length wing.

Re: Slick mag plug harness rubbing up against the firewall.
The washer was called out on a pre war parts break down. My IA looked at it but I didn't remember having put two on. He is pretty particular about those kinds of things but I will check with him again before we fly again. I am ALWAYS happy to have someone look my plane over and spot ANYTHING that looks "funky". Please don't ANYONE ever stop! As for the nuts, they are steel with cotter pins. No elastic stop nuts forward of the firewall. I did have one IA who came to my hangar and told me I couldn't have aluminum fuel fittings firewall forward since they would melt and feed fuel to the fire. (when I told him the rear case was Magnesium he had no response). Likewise the aluminum parts on the case, carb, intake elbows and a list of other parts like the Gascolator. I asked my IA who immediately asked if it was "....." who said it. When I said yes he told me the guy was an idiot and to never let him even touch my plane (which I don't). He (the other IA) has told me MANY things that were just plain stupid over the years and he scares me to death. He is a great source of airport stories, but only seems to ever work on his own plane.

Re: Slick mag plug harness rubbing up against the firewall.
Looking at your photo of the ignition leads it appears that you have an aftermarket set of leads installed. I think a set of factory leads would give you 1/2" or more additional clearance.

Re: Slick mag plug harness rubbing up against the firewall.
Hank, I’m curious where is your source for washers at the firewall joint? There are no washers specified I can find. The engine mount assy has a “washer” welded to it where it meets the firewall.
David, your clip wing must really get with the program with that motor, must really climb.

Did you make a custom mount and bigger fuselage attach bolts, i.e.-6's?
These are not the real engineering drawings but the following list the hardware for the mount to fuselage:
1. F19 & 21 parts list catalog C65/85/O200/O235 mount
2. Instruction manual with 1941 engineering sketches
3. Service manual with 1945 engineering print copies
From F19 Parts List and 2/3 above for on C65, 85 & O200, Lyc 0-145
4 Bolt AN5-31
4 Nut AN310-5
4 Pin AN380-3-3 (The engr dwg copy calls out 382-2-2) No pin listed in F19 PL
F21 PL: O235: (also has same for smaller engines)
4 Bolt AN5-31 bottom, -35 top
4 Nut AN310-5
4 AN960-516
4 Pin AN380-2-3
Franklin install differs, from sketch in #2 above.
4 Bolt AN5-31
4 Boots Nut B-997
4 Washer B-9087
Hope this helps, Mark

Re: Slick mag plug harness rubbing up against the firewall.
No experience with Lycs in Taylorcrafts, but the critical distance is the clearance between the prop and nose bowl either way. If the prop is too close to the bowl the washers will help, if not all they will do is cause the front of the case or one cylinder to touch the bowl (NOT good!). Just hoping he has enough room to gain a bit of clearance for the mag in back. Hope he gets lucky!

Hank, his airplane has a 150hp Lycoming. The mount is different than a little Continental powered Taylorcraft.

Re: Slick mag plug harness rubbing up against the firewall.
Found one on my plane (in fact there are TWO washers between the mount and firewall!) You can see one just in front of the oil cap between the engine and mount if you blow it up.
Hank
This photo was taken to document the over the top crankcase vent option. Cut my oil use to almost nothing!

Re: Slick mag plug harness rubbing up against the firewall.
I took a look for photos of the washers and they always seem to be JUST out of frame. This photo (not of mine, actually of the plug cups) shows the one on the top right (the silver line between the mount flange and the rubber vibration dampener). The washer against the firewall is just barely out of frame. I will look for others.
