I like the idea of going with stainless! Thanks Marty! The reason for stripping and repainting them in the first place was signs of surface rust due to the environment here in the Houston area. Stainless will address that issue plus look good! I really appreciate all the great comments and input. This is part of what makes this forum such an invaluable asset to Taylorcraft owners.
Well, Thanks to Mike Wood and his excellent bungee tool, 043 has nice new bungee cords and new safety cables! Thanks for coming down and the loan of the your equipment Mike! This also paves the way for the remainder of the 'reinstallation' process! Really hoping to both have her all back together by the third week of March and be able to attend the Fort Parker Taylorcraft fly in!
I heard those big bubble-faced compasses really block your view. I would be happy to take it off your hands if you want. I'll make the sacrifice. (Looks great)!
Greg-
Did you get some of the cowling to boot cowl anti-chafe strip from Mike Laz? We installed it instead of the felt that came with the plane. The 3/4" rub strip is factory original and looks fantastic. We in installed it with DAP cement from the aeroplane dept at Home Depot, and it has worked great. Sorry I dont have a photo, I'll try to get one this weekend.
Marty, thank you for your overwhelmingly sincere concern and willingness to sacrifice yourself on my behalf!!? I will keep your offer in mind if I find that there is too much window clutter! :beer chug:
Mike, yes, I did pick up one cowling worth of that material! It has been waiting patiently in my tool box for quite a while now. It will be installed within the next couple weeks along with some new cowling material! I would love to see your photos!!
Marv, the paint is new and nice and shiny! Unfortunately, it has been my experience, there are REALLY nice paint jobs! But, none are perfect? Mine doesn't have any 'runs' but there might be a couple 'crawls' here and there!? Either way, I am really enjoying the process of sprucing up a special plane!
Hank, perhaps a dribble rag is in order? Perhaps you could find your way down to these lower latitudes and provide some personal suggestions?
If politics keeps going like it has you might see me in Texas. There area lot of us talking about buying some land, putting in a private strip and building around it. Really nice if the community could be pretty self sufficient.
Any word on Texas succeeding? ;-) Will we need sponsors to immigrate?
Greg,
I have been following your progress. WOW! Great job!. Thanks for the photos. They certainly provide a lot of encouragement to others who may be facing some or all of these jobs like windshield replacement, bungee replacement, engine top overhaul, panel work, and the list goes on.. You've done a lot of work, but your comments and pictures show that these things aren't rocket science and we shouldn't be afraid to dive in and get after it. This work will pay off and should ensure a lot of continued flying fun for you and your bluebird for the long term future.
I am going to be doing an engine swap later this year and I am sure I will refer back to these photos. They provide a lot of detail that many may benefit from. Hey... I do have one question that maybe you can conveniently measure while you are at this stage. If it isn't too much trouble can you tell me how long the tachometer cable needs to be? I am going to order a new one for mine, but its tough to get a good measurement while everything is buttoned up.
Looks like you are on pace to make Fort Parker. I look forward to getting the chance to view your nice work in person. Man.. with that new windshield and excellent compass... you have a decided advantage to repeat as flour bomb champion, and are now set to dominate the spot landing competition. The rest of us need to get practicing! See you there!
Sorry it took a couple days to get back to you. Thanks for your comments. Greatly appreciated. I did measure the tach cable today. Mine is installed so my measurements might be a little bit off with all the bends? I came up with 40" from the front of the attach nut at the case to the back of the attach nut at the tach. I hope that helps? I also took a few specific pictures of the tach cable (see attached). For your info and anyone else that would like? I have many, many more pictures than I have posted from my teardown/reinstallation process. Most of them were for posterity and my own use to remember where things went!? I would be happy to share pictures with folks if they would be of any value for their project? I am making some minor changes to how things are routed and secured as I reinstall cables and wires. I have the luxury of a little extra time while I am waiting for paint to dry and for cylinders to show back up. Really trying to make things very 'clean' and simple for future 'routine' maintenance. Things like anchor nuts under the new floor boards for the inside fairings instead of the old PK screws thru the aluminum. My old floor boards had three sets of 'old' holes from the ages of annuals, etc...
More pictures and progress to come. (Hopefully soon!?)
