Used a bunch of them, perfect operation and fair price. Use CAR's for installation and list as a minor alteration.

      Hi Edwin,

I had heard before about the CAR4 approach to the tailwheel installation.

Started down that road once in the past but frankly I didn't grasp how to word it or what to reference in CAR4.

Would you mind sending me by PM or posting to the thread the precise wording that I would use and what CAR4 section to reference or perhaps a better way to say it is would be to rely on?

I have a friend with a J3 Cub and want to put a tailwheel on it that is not listed in TCDS.

      Thanks, Dave.

        Dave,
I install it per CAR Part 04a of 4/50. Utilizing the information contained in Part 04a.477.

Not being on the TCDS is not a problem. If you decide to use another manufactures tail wheel not listed it would be a Minor Alteration to the TCDS and logged as such. If you decided to remove the tail wheel and add some kind of plow device or a parachute that would be Major Alteration.

All of these old tail wheels are pretty crappy and have been worn out for years. I would rather install that API tailwheel than try to resurrect one that might work. Seen too many planes damaged by bad tail wheels.

Or apply CAR 04 5/31/38 paragraph 04.442 per TCDS A-696...same words as EO notes but an earlier version of the CAR's.

            Re: The Family Jewel

I'd like to explore using the AP tire on the Lang assembly just to take advantage of the huge price differential, but using the entire AP assembly causes me pause. While they are fine tailwheel units and I've used them on all my homebuilts, their appearance is far too modern for a pre war classic. Frankly, it would ruin the appearance and originality I'm going for with this airplane.

And as an aside, the airplane seems so far to have more than enough rudder authority. Hell, the airplane lands at just over walking speed... Not even sure the tailwheel is on the ground until I'm back in the hangar.

Thanks, that paragraph about tail wheels sets it straight, Dave.

I owned N94978 (1946 BC-12D) when I was in high school in 1952. Found it through FAA records and bot it back as a project several years ago. Should have it up and running in a few more months. I'll post some pics if I can figure out how. Lee Nicklas

§ 4a.477 Wheels. Main landing gear wheels shall
be of a type or model certificated by the Administrator
in accordance with the provisions of Part 15 of this
subchapter and shall not be subjected to static loads
in excess of those for which they are certificated. Tail
wheels may be of any type or model and are not
certificated. Nose wheels are subject to special
rulings to be made by the Administrator.

§ 4a.479 Tail and nose wheels. For the purpose
of the regulation in this part, a tail wheel is considered
as one which supports the tail of a conventional
airplane in the three-point landing attitude. A nose
wheel is considered to be a wheel supporting the
nose of the airplane when the two main wheels are
located behind the center of gravity.
§ 4a.480 Tires. A landing gear wheel may be
equipped with any make or type of tire, provided that
the tire is a proper fit on the rim of the wheel and
provided that the tire rating of the Airplane Tire
Committee of the Tire and Rim Association is not
                    exceeded.
§ 4a.481 Tire markings. When specially
constructed tires are used to support an airplane, the
wheels shall be plainly and conspicuously marked to
that effect. Such markings shall include the make,
size, number of plies, and identification marking of the
                    proper tire.

                      Re: The Family Jewel

Well, the Little airplane has made its first "public" appearance during my company's annual employee car/airplane show and tell. Jumped through all the hoops to land at AF Plant 42 at Palmdale and park at the Lockheed ramp. Aside from the novelty of landing a Taylorcraft on a 600 foot wide runway where SR-71's once thundered was the fact that my Dad used to fly C-130's in here delivering whole shipsets of the L-1011 engines to the production line. The T-craft was on display literally feet from where the old man used to park the Herk and offload the engines. Funny how life works. And yes, the T-craft was the hit of the show.

Also, since my Rocket is down for a significant modification (EFI), the T-craft was pressed into service for my Flight Review yesterday. Nice to have that logged in the books along with the old man. Getting pretty comfortable with the airplane now, and the BFR went just fine. All up, I now have almost 30 hours on her since April. Runs great but it does throw some oil. Hope it hold together until next winter when I can do a proper IRAN on the engine.
