Today, March 1, 2015, four years, to the day, from the day I started my restoration project, N96872 flew again.
I didn't fly her. I had a test pilot inspect, then fly her.
He landed saying that there were no squawks. He said that it was pretty boring flight.
While he was airborne, he sent a photo of the airspeed indicator while flying straight and level.
Once on the ground, he commented a couple of times about how fast it flew. Probably just trying to stroke my ego.
Thanks everybody. The test pilot did a full throttle run-up before departing. The brakes held perfectly.
I was telling everyone who would listen how impossible it had been previously to do even a mild run-up without the airplane wandering away (even though I would be standing on the brakes).
I've been hoping to make the 2015 Central Texas - Fort Parker Flyin for a couple of years now.
It's just about the right distance for me to travel for a flyin. Hope to see y'all there.
I still haven't flown her yet. It has been raining since the test flight.
Thanks again to everybody that helped me with advice, information, parts and guidance over the course of this project.
I just totaled up the costs for this project.
I'll post some details here just in case it might be usefull to others who might be budgeting for such a project.
$4,312 on covering supplies. That includes all fabric, glue, paint and finishing supplies. Covering-specific tools like rib-stitch needles and masking tape are included.
$11,389 on the C85. That includes $2770 for new mags, a $577 carb overhaul, $865 for baffles, STC, $500 used prop
$1,947 for my Radio Box Includes the radio, intercom, batteries, aluminum box, wiring, connectors etc

It looks very nice. The 85 hp makes such a difference! It makes it a different airplane. Lots more fun! I'd add a metal prop when possible.
