  • Engine failure at 20,000 ft

OK, not in a Taylorcraft but a great pair of ATC/cockpit recordings of how to correctly handle an emergency where the engine fails over mountains in IMC with ice:

My one comment: Why does the pilot not use the magic words: Mayday Mayday Mayday? There is no protocol in ICAO for "declaring an emergency" other than the "M" words.

This guy is COOL under pressure, I would fly with him anytime. Next time he does maintenance I would make sure to use an independent QA check! SEVERE case of dry mouth here. Not flying today, maybe I should wet it with Scotch. I wonder if he did.

Did I see down 650 ft/min. at 165 kts? Holy crap, that thing must have about 20 square feet of wing area. What is it anyway? Saw the photo but can't nail the type for sure. Something plastic and really fast, right?

From the picture it looks like a Lancair Legacy. A REAL hot rod!
