  • Visiting Utah

I'm thinking of visiting southern Utah & northern Arizona for ten days in late December, and would be interested to hear of anyone's recommendations for places to see. No skiing...just sight-seeing & winter hiking.

I know about all the National Parks & Monuments (I've been there before) but would be more interested in the "off-track" places, less regularly visited by the average tourist.

For example: which bits of Canyonlands, Lake Mead & Glen Canyon are worth seeing?

You could visit Green River Intergalactic Spaceport.
I don't recommend it. but it has to be the funniest name ever given to a broken down country airport.

      Rob,
      Maybe these sites will help.
Hope you have a great trip

Top Utah travel destinations include skiing in Salt Lake City and Park City, golf in St. George, boating on Lake Powell, exploring Zion and much more.

        Rob,
Mark Julichers' list of museums makes reference to the Hill AFB museum in Ogden. I have heard it is worth seeing, but did not have time to visit the museum when I was in SLC in July.

I read a book by Edward Abbey "Desert Solitaire" that was a fascinating story about his time as a ranger at the Arches Natl Monument. It was a good enough read to make me curious about seeing the places he refers to in the book. Not all of the places though: there is a great chapter about getting stuck in a steep narrow canyon that he was lucky to get out of alive!

          Good museum at Hill AFB.

          Out of the way places:
Wendover Utah. Supposedly a lot of Bomber memorabilia at the airport cafe. A-bomb crews trained here under Col Tibbets.

Promontory Utah. Golden spike museum at the juncture of the transcontinental railroad.

          Anasazi Cliff Dwellings

East of Ogden on the road up the canyon used to be the Grey Cliff Lodge. Excellent trout dinner if the place is still in operation. I last ate there in 1988, so I don't know. Maybe I should Google it.

Moab - so many places to get way off the beaten path it is hard to say.

Hot springs - Google hot springs of Utah and find many out of the way spots.

North Rim of the Grand Canyon - relatively few tourists and more spectacular that south rim.

Dew Drop Inn. A dive outside the gates of Hill AFB where a young captain drank many beers and played pool a long time ago.
          Best Regards,
