  • Off runway, in ditch

In the last three years I've heard locally of at least that many taildraggers going off the runway into a ditch. Is this an epidemic or something?

    Re: Off runway, in ditch

Hey Mike, That isn't a runway, that isn't a ditch and that isn't a taildragger.

    It's a taxiway
It's the road next to the airport
The third wheel is in the back but that is because the plane was going BACKWARDS

    Answer to the question....

Yes, it's an epidemic. Started with Alberto Santos-Dumont in the model 14 (which ALSO had the third wheel -skid- in front that ended up in the rear). It is still going strong. I think Alberto may have been credited with the first ground loop on a working aeroplane and the statement "THIS STUPID THING WANTS TO LAND BACKWARDS! Look out for the DITCH!"

FUNNY post and picture. Looks like a non-injury, at least to the people.

Good thing we don't fly Mooneys or MU2 thingy's...in the last three years, a whole bunch of those have come to grief.

At least the one in Mike's photo is largely complete.
