I have a set of shinn brake assemblies with the backing covers that are attached to them. The brake assemblies that came of my plane the backing covers are not attached. Plus the set that came off my plane are stamped with R and L on the other. The extra set ( the ones with the backing covers attached) are not marked R or L. I think that the stamped side is against the backing cover. Does it matter what side they are installed on? I really don't want to "detach" the backing covers just to see if they are stamped. The backing covers that came off my plane are in very rough shape. I would like to use the extra set that I have.

Re: Shinn Brake Backing Covers
I think that the covers are tacked to the brake assembly. They will not come off. I have a couple pics. The green assembly is the one the cover will not come off. The other assembly came off my project (red cover) I think the side that is marked R or L is up against the cover.Dale

Re: Shinn Brake Backing Covers
Each Shinn brake is either a "R" or "L". The light aluminum backing plate and the brake shoe operating parts are definitely only good one one side or the other, and almost every one I've seen are marked L or R. I say almost because I have an unmarked shoe plate in my parts bin. A couple of things about the green primered set in the photo: There should be a dowel set-pin in the top hole of the inner ring of holes, as you have in the shoe plate on the right. Also, unless someone got creative and glued the alum. backing plate to the shoe plate, you should be able to separate and use the back plate. It may just be that the primer paint on the pieces has glued them together over time. Try a small putty knife or thin blade. The alum. backer is super thin and ruins easily.

Re: Shinn Brake Backing Covers
OK I went back out to the garage and looked thru my parts box again. I found another pair of assemblies that are the same as the green assemblies. These are cleaner and I did find what I think is a date stamp on one. It is stamped 7.29.41. There is no R or L stamped on them that I can see.Dale

Re: Shinn Brake Backing Covers
The things you find when you have a wire brush and a magnifying glass! The assemblies are stamped on the back on the cover. Both sets of assemblies are the same with the brake assembly and cover attached. I want to use one set on my project. Just would like to know if anyone else have seen assemblies like this before? From the other replies I have got, they must not be to common.Dale
