  • who would be interested in an experimental gear

Im thinking of building a jig for some extended gears. The idea would be increasing the aoa on the ground for slower take off speed....these would be experimental gears for now but a direct bolt on with a ski brace etc

chuck or anybody else with an 85 and climb prop and bushwheels could you fly your plane and take an angle finder up on a cool day and record full power and 300fpm climb and the angle of the front door post to the ground or the deck angle off the floor just anywhere i can duplicate to get the math...im thinking 3-4 inches extra would be the ball park with a scott 3200 and 26 inch wheels

pm me if your interested and ill try to get a price put together

Just get a set from Alsworth...he has extended gear on one of his airplanes. One thing to consider is the side loading, you need to beef up the attach fittings and cross tubes. Cub guys found this out when they would get a little off straight, the side load would push one of the cross tubes on the floor up their asses. Some put 1/2" plywood in the seat to keep from getting an enema....

Kind of confused of what you want AOA is measured on the ground with the tail on the ground and with stock gear and 26in tires the plane is at that sweet spot for three point landings both ends seem to get to the ground at the same time but it does make getting in the plane harder Eric call me or email me and will try to get you the numbers you want Chuck

Re: who would be interested in an experimental gear

OK, before the confusion sets in and folks start jumping on what you guys are doing, the angle of INCIDENCE is the angle the wing is on the plane (or referenced to the ground in this case), the angle of ATTACK is the angle of the airfoil to the air flowing in the field around it.
What you are trying to do is find the best INCIDENCE angle with reference to the ground. The next set of jaws I can just see you guys rushing into is that the angle of the wing is NOT measured along the bottom of the wing. It is measured from a line that runs from the center of the circle that can be laid in the very leading edge to the center of the trailing edge. That angle CHANGES because of the twist in the wing.
To keep from getting all complex and just making everything hard, simply to please people who will just find fault and cause confusion (like us technical nerds), I would suggest you use the angle between the ground and the horizontal reference line (the top of the stab) to do all your measurements from. The wing angles are hard to read and wings should all be close to the same angle to the stab
After you guys determine the angles from the horizontal reference line I can shift it to the aircraft you are looking at by knowing the α (Alpha) of the wing integrated along the span. For what you guys are doing you don't need to get in the weeds (academical that is, you probably will REALLY get in the REAL weeds).

Chuck is pretty far along defining how to change the angle for his plane with the power he has and with vortex generators. I haven't looked at the effects of different engines and taking the generators off.

Your results may vary. But this is going to be fun, and I can't wait to kick some Super Cub butt!

Re: who would be interested in an experimental gear

You don't want to mess with down (or up) thrust to change the take-off or landing performance. It WILL change the performaice, but it will also change a lot of things when you are flying in other than slow and high angle of attack flight, and the changes won't be fun. If your thrust line is off you will experiance pitch changes when you change the power setting. If a Taylorcraft has excess up thrust the nose will pitch up with a power increase, if there is too much down thrust the nose will pitch down with power increase. To get a significant increase in take-off or landing performance you would need so much thrust line change it will make the plane miserable to fly in cruise or the patern.

Reducing weight and changing the ground angle is the easiest way to improve low speed performance, right after adding lots of little HPs to the front. I am starting to be a believer in VGs too.

I would just go for 29s or 31s, less of a hassle and less of a beating on the air frame.

Just a little thread creep when I ordered my bush wheels and told them what they were going on for the STC they asked for some photos after i mounted them so i sant them some and low and behold here is there current catalog inside the back cover they have a photo section and guess what is there a Tcraft my Tcraft look out super cubs
