  • struts passed again

Just got back from Green Bay with my struts which Dave say were as good as new.
He did them 4 years ago really 3 1/2 years since I didn't want to do it in the early spring.
Great Lakes Testing did it again. The only thing that changed was the cost.
Last time it was $200. for the 4 struts.
This time it was $300. for the 4 struts.
Gas for my friends truck,Lunch for my wife.
AP helping me taking them off and putting them on ??
might be time to think about having them sealed.

    Re: struts passed again

My neighbor an A&P and I removed struts last month, I drove them over to Clearwater airport and has them x-rayed and signed off. Reinstalled them and got paperwork all set. Total cost $200 for inspections and $25.00 gas as well as $20.00 for our lunches. That works out to $60.00 a year, figure a new sealed set shipped, installed, painted, and adjusted would be about $3500.00. Or maybe break even in say 60 years, yikes, I am retired now and and I know where I will be in 60 years... Just my 2 cents...

Paragon in Wichita Ks did mine... 175.00 A&P helped me take them off and put them on for free Paragon is on the way from the hangar to my house... so figure gas and all 20.00 they passed great... I am 63 I would have to live to 145 to make sealed ones break even... So I am good.

For that kind of money, can I be your IA? you are WAY off on that one. 1 hour to remove, 2 to install is only 300 labor tops, struts are only 1600 plus some for shipping. If you do some of the work yourself, it will be less. Tim

Struts are $2100-$2300 depending on where you get them. $100-$200 to ship them. Shipping is not cheap anymore. They need to be painted. Unless you have left over paint it will cost $150 by the time you get all the primer, paint, catylist, and reducers. I don't think you could prime and paint the struts in less than 3 hours. $150-$200.

By truck or air freight in a tube. Don't cut them so they can go UPS.

Around here, wrapped in bubble wrap, put in PVC drain pipe which airport has, screw fitting at each end, shipped UPS. Same with props. Works well.
