  • 75th Anniversary of the Cub, What happened last year for Taylorcraft???

Just curious, everything in every flying magazine I have been reading of late has been advertising the magical 75th anniversary of the over-priced, cult-like Piper Cub.

What happened to the 75th anniversary last year of Taylorcraft??? I sure didn't read or see anything at OSH about it. Definitely no advertising about a mass fly-in at Airventure.

Though I love my Taylorcraft I hate the fact it seems to be the bastard step-child of the airplane world.
    Cheers,
    Marty

Not the "bastard step child", it is the Cinderella of classic light planes. WE know what we have and there is NOTHING like taking a Cub driver up and having him realize he has been stuffing his big ugly foot in a glass slipper that doesn't fit. The Cub is a great plane, but next to the Taylorcraft it is the step sister with big feet.

EVERY pilot should have a Cub at some time. Every pilot who has had a Taylorcraft wants to keep her, or get another.

Hank, I agree. But show me a picture of a Cub sitting on an airfield falling apart. I can think of several Taylorcrafts like that.

But, my main question still remains. Why no big Airventure anniversary for the T-Craft last year???
      Cheers,
      Marty

Marty, the Thorp guys have been asking the same question. Thay have wanted to be recognized and maybe do a formation fly over with some of their ex military pilots, but they don't carry enough clout.

On the other hand, look at the RVs... they reproduce like rabbits...they are all over the map and.... they show up in groups. Is like they belong to a cult ...or ..?

Now, talking about last weekend's Cub gathering at Lock Heaven PA, on Saturday I counted four Taylorcrafts and.... lots of good positive comments from other pilots and old timers... such as ".. Taylor designed the plane and Piper run with the fame..", " I owned a Taylorcraft and sold it ... I regret doing that..." ( comment by a Cub driver).... so not bad for a step child !!!. Not a bad appearance to a family party that you were not invited to !!

Once you fly a Taylorcraft, you dont go back !!!

            Cheers !!!

I am not a high time pilot, having started in a 172(about 50hrs), then transitioning into the Cub, with about 70hrs of Cub time. Of recent, the Cub is really all I knew. When I finished my prewar Taylorcraft and finally got it into the air, it was as if something magical happened...... I felt like an eagle up there. I actually felt like the plane was part of me and obeyed my thoughts. I honestly cant imagine another plane as light and respectful as 20407 was to me. Of course, I was terrified of the demon like landing characteristics that I had been warned about. My first landing in 20407 was one of my best yet....again almost magical. Other than the last forced landing, I have yet to make a "bad" landing and certainly have no reason to fear this plane. The rebuild has been painfully slow, but I sure look forward to the day that I can take it up and feel like an eagle again!

My personal feeling about why the Taylorcraft is not as well received at Oshkosh is that there is no Taylorcrafter's or Carbon Taylor companies advertising in Sport Pilot Magazine. It is all about the money these days.

I personally don't know anyone at Oshkosh and I don't run any of the get-togethers while there. I usually just spend the last weekend there so I miss everything Taylorcraft related. I'm curious to hear from those 'in-the-know' as to why there was no hoopla over our anniversary.

It isn't the 75th anniversary of the Cub, it's the 75th anniversary of the J-3 Cub. The first Cub was of course the Taylor Cub in 1930. So should the 75th of the first Taylorcraft been celebrated (1935?), or the 75th of the B model, or?

Last year Forrest celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Taylorcraft at Alliance during the annual fly-in at his place. Other than that, who knows.

And, considering the J-3 is the most prolific I believe the anniversary is for the J-3. That is what the latest Vintage, and other publications are indicating.

I have 4 Tcrafts and a J3....All are fun. I love them all. the Tcrafts outperforms the cub so easily though it makes my friends marvel at it....of course I have a C85 in one, a C90 in one and 2 with A65's I am rebuilding my J3 as we speak and I converted it to an L4 for aesthetics. I just like the way it looks. anyways.....the cub gets top billing because soo many of them were produced and Bill Piper was a good business man... Not because it was a better plane... Just more were out there and people identified with it. that is it.

I believe that is exactly the reason why you find Taylorcrafts sitting outside becoming one with the Earth again while Cubs are restored to pristine condition. I find it sad that a once proud airplane is now the back-of-the-line 'economy' airplane.

I Think MONEY was the answer. Bill Piper was an OIL MAN, (lottsa money) When he and Taylor split, Taylor was probably constantly scratching for money, while Piper had lotsa money for promotion and marketing. When you fly both on the same day its tough to not vote for the Taylorcraft as the best of the two. Super Cub is another story, GREAT airplane, lotsa
