  • Ferry flight from South East Virginia to Kansas City

Any of you guys interested in doing a ferry flight on one BEAUTIFUL Taylorcraft from Suffolk Virginia to Kansas City? Probably easiest if you are close to one end or the other. ;-)
Never done this myself so not really sure how it works but the owner can't get his computer to log on to the Forum so I said I would post this for him. Drop a post here and I will get you in touch with Ray.
    Hank

NO, it is NOT one of my planes! That would be like selling a member of the family.

I think it would be more like sharing your wife.

The airplane is delivered to its new base at East Kansas City Airport, here is crossing the Mississippi just North of St. Louis:

At Ohio University earlier in the day:

About 14 hours of flying from Virginia Beach to KC, an enjoyable trip, and it sure is nice to have 24 gallons on board-

Only problem with 24 gallons of fuel is I don't have a 24 gallon bladder! Been a while since I crossed the Mississippi. Has the Missouri gone back down yet? glad you had a good flight and can't wait to do a cross country like that in my 41.
I miss Ray's (now your) plane already. Got to get the 41 flying before Ray forgets how fun a Taylorcraft is.

Hope the new owner keeps us up on how she does.

That is one beautifull photo of the Mississippi , thanks for posting, makes you want to go and fly, espescially with the spring and beautifull landscapes now,its no wonder that so many pilots who have flown commercially all there lives still find it the most fun thing they do, even when they retire.

The photo of the Mississippi doesn't show the wind gusting to 20 plus, made for an interesting landing at Creve Coeur. But it was a tailwind...
The comedian Steven Wright used to have a joke: "I have a map of America. It's life size." After flying my Taylorcraft to something like 38 states from coast to coast I kind of feel that way too. It is a great way to see the country.

I'm pretty sure the new owner lurks here, maybe will post once he starts flying it.

Re: Ferry flight from South East Virginia to Kansas City

Had another Taylorcraft trip this week, lots of miles in them lately. Went to Northern Illinois with my friend Steve to pick up a 1940 BC-65 that his wife bought, and flew it back to Virginia. Nice trip, a little bumpy at times, but reminding me again of why I like Taylorcrafts.

Steve's Swift was the chase plane-

This BC-65 has the 6 gallon aux tank behind the seat, with a little lever near the floor between the pilot and passenger, you pump it up and down to transfer the fuel to the main tank. It only works on the up stroke, and it takes 350 strokes to transfer 1 gallon!

Here following the remains of an old RR track towards Troy, OH

Ray’s good work has been noted by several people at 3GV, Thanks Ray.
That is a nice find Steve, I’m sure the wife is flying all the time.
Andrew, thanks for the delivery of the T-Craft and the photos here.
I had to let the T-Craft sit a week while I got current and now have flown 18 hrs. since May 4th, 3 hours last night alone. I have not gone to far from home base, but plan on going to Zangger Vintage (2AV) soon in Larchwood IA, East of Sioux Falls SD and the IA27 Blakesburg, Iowa Antique Airfield Labor Day weekend. I have made a quite a few jumps over to Liberty Landing near Missouri City, neat little place.

Re: Ferry flight from South East Virginia to Kansas City

Ray has really been getting into his next projects. Hard to focus on mine when he has such exciting toys. I really miss seeing his T on the field.
Say hello to the "Stud Muffins" (their name, not mine) from the Dawn Patrol at Liberty Landing for me. They have more fun than any group of pilots I have ever known. Don't be surprised if they infect you with the WW-I replica virus. LOTS of really neat first war replicas out there now.

                          Hank,
I wish I would have taken more time and checked out the sights in VA Beach, aviation museum etc. When I was out at Liberty Landing the weekend of the Kentucky Dirby I meet the group, must have been six of those little WW-I fighters all nestled into the hanger, and Dick Starks wife has one of those little birds too. Harvey Cleveland is staying busy out there too. Neat place.

The Dawn Patrol guys define fun with an airplane. If you haven't ever seen their build videos you don't know how crazy a group of "adults" can be. NEVER turn your back to those guys while working! They are FAMOUS for goosing people when they least expect it.
I really miss the "Dicks" (Starks and Lemons), Marvin Story, Tom Glaeser, Mark Pierce and the only sane one in the group, Sharon. Lots of new guys have joined their Pam sprayed pan of "Stud Muffins" since I was there last but just remember my warning, if you hang with them for a while, you WILL want to build a WW-I plane!
I really miss those folks. The definition of good mid-western fine folks.

So we will see you in Blakesburg with the Taylorcraft? I'm already toying with the idea of going to a metal prop.
