DEET seems to work great, and I am too old for more three headed kids. ;-) Only problem I have with it is it causes skin rash on me. I had a friend years ago who was a nudist and he swore by Skin-So-Soft from Amway. Doesn't cause skin problems (of course he was putting it on skin I don't have exposed) and seems to work with the laid back, south of the Mason Dixon bugs we get. I wonder how well it will work on the Alien monsters you guys get in Alaska.

Actually Hank, "Skin So Soft" is sold by Avon. I know this because 1 in 4 women are Avon sales people (at least it seems that way) and I work with mostly women.

Skin so soft worked on the Mississippi for one year but the next not so well! We are going to try vanilla extract this year, that is supposed to be the hot ticket now! Like hiring rain makers, your luck may vary!

OK, I will buy Avon vs. Amway, but the IMPORTANT question is, do the women you work with wear cloths when they use it? ;-)
As for using Vanilla extract, I would think that would work best if everyone ELSE wore it. Seems like it would attract the bugs, not repel them. This is why we need to have data from field tests.

Maybe the Skin-so-Soft worked on my friend because the bugs didn't want to see him "nekid" either! The thought would make me miss more than one lunch.

This forum is truly amazing! Somehow we got from a nice little weekend fly-in at a quaint Alaskan village to the preferred bug repellant for unattractive nudists all in the same thread! It's OK...as long as we are expanding our knowledge base. So...this is what we have so far...there is going to be a Taylorcraft fly-in at Skwentna, Alaska this Sunday afternoon from 2:00 - 5:00. There will be a BBQ and flour bombing competition. There will also be mosquitos. Everyone needs to keep their clothes on at the fly-in. If the bugs are biting you, ask one of the female attendees if they have any skin-so-soft. You will have a 25% chance that she is an Avon dealer. If she is not an Avon dealer, ask her for some soap. You will have a 33% chance that she is an Amway dealer. (You will also have a .32% chance that she is an Amway dealer who is also a nudist...but that won't matter because everyone needs to keep their clothes on in Skwentna.) If no one is an Avon or Amway dealer, rub some vanilla extract on the exposed parts of your body. Then add some flour from the 'exploded' flour bombs. I always carry chocolate with my survival gear. We are now 1/2 way to a batch of chocolate chip cookies. That should chum in a grizzly bear or two. Now we have completely forgotten about the bugs. Problem solved.

LORD! I Love Alaska humor. Will a rifle big enough for a bear fit in the baggage compartment of a Taylorcraft? Anyone have a good recipe for bear BBQ?

Notice that is BEAR, not BARE. ;-) Which brings up another question, what kind of BEER is big in Alaska? We could be eating bear BBQ and drinking beer while bare in Barrow!

I sure hope the guys who make the fly-in have as much fun as we do on this thread. I want to go to one in Alaska, but from down here on the Chesapeake Bay I would need to leave now for NEXT years get together!

Down here the Black Bears are much smaller. Most just stick to handguns.

Thanks to all who came to the fly-in today. It was a fun day and the weather cooperated nicely for us. We had 10 Taylorcrafts plus 2 Citabrias, 2 Cessna 185s, and a Cessna 182 for a total of 15 aircraft. Nikole and Alex took the Flour Bombing prize with a 9ft drop from their Citabria. Pictures and a video will be posted soon!

Thank you for organizing the event Jim, a great way to extend comraderie in the aviation community. Suzan and I had a good time and look forward to next year and other fly-ins or impromptu get-togethers.

Your video makes me really sorry to live so far from Alaska. One thing I notice is either I have tail wheel tires on my main gear or you guys need to check your inflation gauges! The TRACTORS around here have smaller tires.

Looks like a great time! I assume the white stuff in the background wasn't white sand from the beach? ;-) A friend of mine years ago was going to take a kayak trip down some river in Alaska, He was going to take a .357 Magnum revolver with him for protection from bears. Someone up there told him to be sure to save one shot for himself, because he was going to be dealing with one very angry bear if he shot him with that .357!
