  • Dual Impulse-Coupling Mags?

I'm in the middle of a recover project on my 1946 BC-12. When I get my airplane back together, I plan to purchase new Slick mags. I'm leaning towards getting both mags with impulse-coupling (I assume that is available) for my A-65 (handpropper).
Any reason not to get both mags with impulse-coupling?

    Tim,

I think that is the way they come, kit K4334, dual impulse. This is what I have.
    Cheers,

I put slicks on my plane 4 years ago and they are great. Never a problem starting cold or hot.

the a65 that just came off 26658 has a little over 300 hrs on slicks with duel impulse mags and it NEVER took more then 2 blades to start it

OK thanks. That is good news. I guess I never had a plane with impulse on both mags. I didn't realize that it was the new standard.

So when y'all start your engines (with 2 impulse-coupling mags), you start with both mags hot, right?

              Nice.
              I'm looking forward to that.

What should I do with my old mags? I know that I can return them to get my $300 core charge back. But is there any higher purpose for these mags? Or does everyone just turn them in as cores?

The Slick 4301 mag will give you very good , economical service for the first 1000 hrs.

There is an internal inspection of E-Gap & visual @ the 500 hr point.

Suggest you plan on replacing the carbon brush ( under $10) at that time.

At the 1000 hr point I believe they want you to replace the bearings & other items.

A concern here is that Slick pricing is different than TCM/Bendix.

You don't need much & you have paid for a new mag.

The S4(R)N in the pic is a very good mag.

New cost is about $2000 ( read as TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS) each.

Parts pricing is different & there are several PMA companies making them for about 1/2 TCM/Bendix cost.

Both types will provide excellent service.

My take is that many folks with mag problems have never done any of the recommended maintenance.

Replacing the Carbon brush & adjusting Contact Points every 500 hrs. is a small price to pay for reliability.

If all the AD's have been complied with they are worth more than the $150.00 for each mag.

                    Re: Dual Impulse-Coupling Mags?

Somewhere I read that Slick is destroying all the cores they get (to get rid of rebuilt competition?)

I would for sure get the Bendix ones rebuilt instead. But then that is just me. I know several Aircraft Inspectors that absolutely hate Slicks. One of their complaints is that parts are really poorly engineered/ cheaply manufactured. The one that inspects my aircraft used the term "junk." I have no personal experience with them myself.

If you want some cores to send them there are plenty out here. I have a box of junk mags and I have heard the same thing. They want them to destroy them and remove competition. Actually sounds like a good business plan from their perspective.

Want to trade your rebuild-able ones for some junk? ;-) For SURE, don't turn them in if they work at all.

When you are sending an engine in for overhaul is an excellent time to get rid of JUNK mags & harnesses & plugs.,

I don't believe the o/h shops are doing Slicks anymore so they are sent in for "meltring".

I missed out on a couple 4300 series w 130 hrs & harnesses because they wanted to hurry.

Things like mags, cylinders , controls, are what I refer to as "priceless junk".

You may agree if you collect your stash & DONATE them.

Unairworthy parts still make great Instructional Aids.

See if you can deal with a AMT (A & P ) or Flight Program school or a museum that has a aviation instructional program.

Generally the organization ACCEPT them & provides a letter.

YOU must determine & justify the value.

                        Don't get greedy!

For teaching purposes an undersize prop is worth a much as an Airworthy one .,

Might be easier to carry also.

                          2011 prices from ACS

                          Distributor Block $285 (Slick) $85(TCM/Bendix)

                          Coil $278 (Slick) $138 (TCM/Bendix0

This is a little unfair as Slick packages some parts as an "assembly".

Unless you have a key operated electric starter, you want dual impulse couplings. One function of the impulse coupling is to delay the spark until near TDC. If the non-impulse mag were to fire at 25 BTDC or so the engine would kick back. Key operated starters turn the right mag off during starting and fire only the one (left) with the impulse coupling.

NY86 & other hit the mark with a recommendation for dual impulse coupled mags.

No such such thing as "too much spark" when starting.

There is a very simple option with a key starter switch that allows either 1 or Both mags to fire when starting.
