Nice installation Kevin, and good pix too. I'm interested in the left side heat exchanger. Looks like the Luscombe one listed in the Wag Aero catalog. I think my old left side exhaust assembly is going to last a for quite a while, but always good to know confirmed details on replacements.

Here ya go Craig. Here's pics of the exhaust I put on Crispy. This exhaust is for an 8F luscombe. Keep in mind I am running an 0200 on a short mount but I think the exhaust will also fit a C65.

I am still finding my way around on here and have not been able to locate any pictures of crispy critter. Are they suppose to be in the photo gallery?

My left exhaust header is, I believe, an older Luscombe header with modified flanges to match a custom shroud. I'll try to get you a shot of the cowling exhaust exit area and one of a side view of the newer header installation.

Here are some notes about the lessons we have learned to date about implementation of the Luscombe exhaust on Taylorcrafts.

1. Be sure to question the supplier (up front) about the welded tabs on the stacks. There are supposed to be these tabs on which the shrouds are to be attached. One of the suppliers (I cant remember if it is Univair or Wag Aero) that does not supply these tabs and you must locate and weld these yourself.

2. The so-called "silver coat" as referred to by this thread is actually more appropriately referred to as "aluminizing". It is a process by which molten aluminum is sprayed onto the steel exhaust as a rust preventative and cosmetic coating. Oil stains this stuff, but it does a pretty good job of slowing the rust degradation process that is inherent to steel exhaust parts.

3. Use of the Luscombe exhaust on Taylorcrafts with open cowl may interfere with the cowling. This can be dealt with in one of two ways. The best way is to cut a slot on the inboard side of each stack half way thru the tube about 1.5 inches below the cylinder flange, then heat and bend the whole header inward so that the headers are canted at an inward angle about 5 to 10 degrees. Then weld these slots closed. The other (less desirable) way to deal with this is to trim your cowling with larger openings around the exhaust stacks.

4. Use of RTV sealant on exhaust shrouds is a NO-NO. This can allow noxious fumes to enter the cockpit.

I disagree... If you compare the measurements of the exhaust ports on an A65 vs. a C85 in their respective continental service manuals, you will see that they are identical by design. If you have any differences it could be due to non-standard differences... such as reduced crankcase deck height, PMA cylinders, or some other discrepancy.

I can only relate to my experiences, and twice I've had to extend the "back straight" (parallel with the firewall) on conversions from and to normal unmodified crank cases and Continental OEM cyliners.

I'm coming out of left field on this, but is Rob possibly talking about adapting the "crossover" version of the Luscombe exhaust and not the dual divided pipes?

To make it fit you have to cut it along the "back straight" and weld in a piece. It's best to do this when the engine is off the airframe to guarantee it fits.

I just installed a set of the luscombe pipes for a customer, easy as pie, the hardest thing is removing the old exhaust. Still need to find affordable shrouds. Terry's STC is slick to do. Tim

Definitely Luscombe "silver" coated exhaust. There is a thread talking about them here. On thread I think there is a link to making a replacement for the carb heat exchanger. The "factory" one is expensive; as I remember, that was one problem. I have the right side Luscombe exhaust only on my -85, works fine, last a long time. Look all over for prices as I think there is enough difference to make it worth while.

OK, checked for you. Wag Aero July 2011 catalog, pg 54, set, both sides $429. "For continental engines." Aircraft spruce, a little over $600 for both.
