Ok guys need some more help. I was removing the paint off the flying tail wires and brackets and have decided to replace these wires. I measured all of them and this is the problem the lowers are right at 40 1/2 inches and one upper is 44 inches and the other upper is 43 inches. when you look these up at wagaero they show a 38 1/2, 40 5/8 and 36 1/2. I dont know which ones to order any help would be appricated. Thanks

    Re: Tail flying wires

Need to know what year and model you plane is. I have a pre-war and a post-war Taylorcraft and actually have all of the wires together at the airport. I know they are different, but can measure them the next time I am out there (which should be soon since I FINALLY GOT AN AC UNIT IN THE WALL OF THE WORKSHOP YESTERDAY!!!!!!! No more 110* days in the shop!)

      Re: Tail flying wires

Wag Aero has wires for two taylorcraft models I know thw 44 inch ones are the top wires for the BC12D I think the 381/2 are correct for the bottom.

          Re: Tail flying wires

          Univair has them...
          UA-461 Bottom wire $27.55 ea
          UD-40 Top wire $27.55 ea

These part numbers match the BC12D parts manual.
I have installed these.. they are correct

Thanks I did that very thing and ordered them today. Talked to Univair and they could not explain it either, the different lengths. No damage history either. Just plain strange. Maybe 60 years of work and they are just wore out.

              Re: Tail flying wires

I talked to Univair this morning and they said that the Upper wires were 44.125" and their Lower wires were 41".
So thisi looks like it might be right for Ray's bird.

But my Uppers measure around 41" and my Lowers measure around 36.5".

Univair said they didn't offer anything around 36.5". So I'll check out Wag-Aero.

                Re: Tail flying wires

I figured it out they, had to cut about a quarter of an inch off the ends to keep them from bottoming out on the bracket.

                  Re: Tail flying wires

Burls Aircraft has heavy duty stainless wires, need to send him your spoke nuts though because he increased the diameter. Tim

                    Re: Tail flying wires

Took a lot longer to get to the airport than I planned. Try this for excuses,
                    wild fire
                    earth quake
                    tornado
                    hurricane
                    flood
Got a plague of mosquitoes not locusts and so far the rivers aren't turning to blood nor do the first born appear unhealthy but we are watching. It has been a WILD SUMMER!
Anyway, the hangar and home came through the storms fine with almost no water in the hangar. Now to the tail wire numbers....

The 45 upper wires are 44 3/8" long overall with 2" of thread on each end.
The 45 lower wires are 40 1/2" long overall with 2" of thread on each end.

The 41 upper wires are 40 1/4" long overall with 2 1/4" of thread on each end and
the 41 lower wires are 36 1/4" long overall with 2 1/4" of thread on each end.

Again, the overall length INCLUDES the threads and although I like rolled threads for fatigue resistance, they look like they are cut threads.
