  • AD Note on A-65 Cylinder

    Can somebody explain to me about the AD note pertaining to the spark plug insert on the A-65-8 cylinder.
    I initially put this note on the for sale discussion. Anyway the cylinder shop here in Miami tells me they can't redue my clinders because of an AD Note making it e-legal to sign off the cylinders because of the spark plug inserts..

    Bad thing is that it only takes one person to hand you the AD to kill the cylinder even if 100 say they never heard of it and think you can use the part.
    I will put my name on the 100 list (for all the good it does you) and recommend that if the shop wants to scrap the cylinder because of "the plug insert AD" THEY should show you the AD! I have never seen it or heard of it, but would REALLY like to see a copy if it exists (as would my A&P and my IA!).
    If they are going to claim it exists, THEY HAVE THE BURDEN OF PROOF. We can't prove a negative.

    Of course, they DO have the right to refuse to use the cylinder even if there is no AD, but they risk getting a reputation for not knowing what they are talking about. If they DO know what they are talking about, I want to look at my cylinders to make sure I don't have a bad one. They will be my hero and I will be the first to thank them.

      Hi Sal,

      This is the best that I can come up with;

      1) I just looked and find that no such AD exists.

      2) Maybe something got lost in the translation and they are referring to the rocker shaft lug AD and you guys are not communicating?

      3) Save yourself some grief a send your cylinders to Gibson Aviation (800) 992-4880

        Sal,
        The only issue I've had with the inserts is sometime they will pull out with the plug. I've had some success re-installing and re-pinning. The biggest problem is the availability of new inserts, and the oversize inserts as well.

        The shop you chose may not have the parts needed for replacement and took the easy way out and commented on an AD, real or imagined, to hide the fact that they had no way of replacing if found loose.

        I'm sure they value your business and deserve a chance to explain their comment. It may have come from someone that is speaking from "tribal knowledge" and not fact.

                Yeah Hal, sometimes the aviation business reminds me of a Harry Potter movie, or perhaps a "box of chocolates."
