  • Bumps and Notches

I knew that would get your attention.

I have a -85 on a short mount and at some point I am going to have to give in and put "bumps" on my upper cowling to get rid of the remaining ignition noise.

It appears that I will have to cut a notch in the front bowl cowl for the front left plug clearance.

I can imagine there are several combinations of ways to handle that and the installation of the bump on that side.

Anyone have pictures, examples, ideas, suggestions?

    ALL and ANY input appreciated.

Before you go cutting up good aluminum check to make sure that there are not short resistor plugs available. My memory isn't what it used to be, but I thought I read somewhere a few months back that someone was going to start manufacturing resistor plugs that were short. I am sure someone will chime in here and provide a name of the manufacturer.

I am getting a new cowl rebuilt. The person doing the cowl is making a form and is making mine out of carbon fiber. He will have the casting form made and im sure he would be more than happy to make some more.

Darryl, I have the 85 on a short mount too, and I don't have shielded ignition. Eismann unshielded mags. I don't like the bumps, and I don't have trouble communicating with anyone.

Why "at some point" are you going to have to "give in"?

            Rob,
I'm just tired of dealing with switching to the quiet mag when working in a heavy traffic area. The bumps don't bother me, as mine is a go plane, not a show one. You must have a really magic radio if you don't have any trouble with noise.

            All,
I just repositioned my radio so I could see the display easily and I am looking forward to getting rid of the noise so I can relax a little even in a busy traffic environment.

I am mostly interested in how to handle the necessary cut out in the front bowl. Also whether anyone has installed that bump as two pieces or does everyone just let the front end overlap as one piece. (as per factory as I remember.)

I couldn't find a picture of my cowl notch, but it looks just like the one on "Songbird".

For the folks who don't like the looks of cowl bumps: My project plane came with shielded ignition and NO cowl bumps! That's right. Mr. Previous Owner simply cut holes in the cowl so the tops of the plugs and the wires were right there hanging out there in the breeze. Real classy.

There is nothing wrong with the Songbird on your plane. I was just joking. I remembered the twin engine Sky King Songbird and was just trying to be funny. I liked the Sky King show when i was kid and probably a lot of people on the forum today never heard of the show. I still would like it. Marv

You might be surprised at how many on the Forum remember Sky King. I used to have a link to all the Sky King shows. If I can find it I will post it.

Sky King and his niece Penny, lived on the Flying Crown Ranch. They fley a Cessna T-50 (Bamboo Bomber) then upgraded to a 310. As a kid (7 or 8)
I watched and dreamed of flying. Started flying when I was 16, still going strong at 63 thanks to light sport. Hope to continue into my 90s.
