OK, I know that is tempting, but a lot of people have taken the plates off their engines and LEGALLY put a new one on at overhaul. Are you SURE there isn't another engine out there with that serial number? I know it is a pain in the backside, but we DON'T need the problems that come with two engines showing on the FAA database with the same ID! They don't check, YET! but it will happen soon just because it is so easy to do.
We had a case where a helicopter was wrecked and the logs got separated from the main wreckage when parts were sold. You guessed it, one guy had the data plate with his wreckage and another had the logs and most of the other wreckage. BOTH REBUILT THEIR PARTS AND PUT THE SAME N NUMBER AND SERIAL NUMBER ON! The legal mess was INCREDIBLE!
Check the FAA database and be sure that serial number isn't out there flying!

In the Navy we also had a plane that was rebuilt from two damaged planes. Try explaining two sets of logs and two BUNOs on one plane!
OK, I just looked at the registry and DIDN'T see the engine serial number. I guess I was remembering when I was working military planes.
Does anyone working inside FAA know what data they DO track on the components of GA planes?

OK, somebody explain to me how when the registration from the FAA comes they know what SN engine is on my plane? Am I remembering wrong? I could swear I got a letter from the FAA that had my engine information on it.
Maybe I'm just starting to get "old timers". ;-)
The main reason I remember was I was afraid there would be a problem because my plane was a BL when it was built and while it was in "Gubmnt hands" during WW-II it got a Continental transplant with no entry in the logs. It just sort of suddenly "was there". I worried about it at first, but no one seemed to care. It has had the A-65-8 since sometime before 1945.
