aileron links

Tribe: Taylorcraft BD12: A couple of questions, hope someone can help us out. Are both the L/H and R/H aileron links the same? When we took it apart there was a wooden dowl inside the link rod about 3/8" dia. and approx. 3 1/2" long. Is this a recommended part? Does anyone have link rods complete with adjustment end screws and ball fittings that they would like to sell? I require one.

Hello Bob,

Both links are the same.

The wooden dowel is definitely wrong. It should be either a hollow steel tube or a solid aluminium rod. Both types are shown in the attachment below.

I think there is a left and a right. The red one is the left.

left and right bodies are not interchangeable. insert is solid with sphere shape on each end for ball to move in

Oops...that's right, the outside bodies are different.

The insert does not have integral sockets for the actuating ball...the hardened inserts are separate.

Just a question. How much fore and aft play is allowable. Side play is nit but I have 3/8 fore and aft play.

Almost no play is correct; the balls should swivel within the cupped pieces with just enough room for a little lubricant. Fore and aft play on the actuator rods would mean up and down play on the aileron without moving the controls. The end caps take up the slack by screwing in tighter as needed. 3/8" play is a lot...

Doing the annual on NC43306. Both links needed a 1/2 turn adjustment to take up the "play"...aircraft had 50 hours since I had installed the links at rebuild...quite a few items had "worked"...hence the annual! Doc
