NOISY intercom

Few touch & goes today before the flurries started.
Holy crap..enough is enough!
Even the new intercom is noisy with Eiselman mags & unshielded wires & plugs.

Whats the perfered method to actually use a intercom & radio in the old 65?
& please don't say new Slicks, wires & plugs
If I had that much $$ I probably wouldn't be flying a 46 T-Crate

I have a set of Case mags, is it correct the gears from them will fit a (used, if I find them) set of Bendex mags??

I have a set of unshielded Eiselman mags on the plane now, I also heard you can get a shielded cap for them that, with a set of shielded wires & plugs (got lots of them) will greatly reduce the static?

Opinions & advice please....what'd you say

Hi,

There is a ton of information on this site related to this subject. Just use the search function and I am sure you will find your answer.

I recently bought a set of Ercoupe cups for mine, I posted a thread and pictures of these just recently. They were allegedly NOS, though I think they were new manufacture. Very nice, $47.50 each from Fresno Air Parts.

I won't be messing with mine until the weather gets better. I don't want to cut into my cowl so between the cups on the top, shielded plugs on the bottom, shielded wires, etc., I am hoping to quiet mine down somewhat.

I have an A-65, Bendix breadbox mags, unshielded wires, shielded ignition switch wires to an A7 switch, C-26 plugs, and a Terra 720 (also used a Genave Alpha-100 in the day). I just turn the squelch down. Does affect the range, but not enough to bother me. I get very little noise but the FBO guys say they can hear me coming on Unicom for about 10 minutes.

Bought slicks with shielded wires and a microair 760 with a PS engineering PM1000 intercom. no static now....

My '46 BC12-D1 had the same setup as yours: original Eisemann mags, unshielded harness, and unshielded plugs. The intercom was noisy, but could be squelched. The hand-held radio, however, was nearly worthless, even with an external antenna. I used to have to throttle way back and switch to just one mag to be heard at all, and to hear, beyond spitting distance of the airport.

Finally the coils on the Eisemanns were getting weak with age and wear, and needed replaced. Replacements were available, but they were "new old stock", hadn't been manufactured in years. I read that they may be actually quite old, and often the new replacements weren't much better than the old used ones. So I dug deep for a new set of Slicks, harnesses, and plugs, with four "Ercoupe" cups for the top so I wouldn't have cowl bumps. It all works great, and I'm glad I did it. Starting in any temperatures is easy and quick now too.

Does that mean nobody has heard of a shielded cap to fit Eislemans?

Or if Case gears will fit Bendex mags?

I wasn't able to find any way to convert my non-shielded Eisemanns to shielded, e.g. a shielded cap. Maybe someone else knows of something...

I have probably worked more with the Eisemann mags than anyone on the forum here but I don't have any experience with the unshielded version. I suspect that you cannot convert one to the other. I'll look at my manual.

I use shielded plugs on the bottom and cups (not worth too much, frankly) on the top. The problem, I believe, is the lack of resistors in the plugs that will fit in the cups. Just switching to the "bottom" mag makes it all quiet for me. One problem is that there is obviously some TERRIBLE radio hookups out there; weak signals, distortion, etc.

I suspect that Eisemann cases are getting scarce as Slick keeps "buying" and destroying them.

I seem to remember someone who took a shielded mag and leads, cut the plug end off the shielded leads and replaced them with unshielded clips that he ran into cups. The shielding on the leads grounded to the threaded caps that screwed on the cups so there was a continuous ground circuit and it was supposed to be really quiet. I know if the shield on the lead isn't grounded on each end, you will let a LOT of noise out!
This set up was supposed to have been approved by his IA (for whatever that is worth!)

Hmmm rumor has it that the gear from the Case will fit the Slick. Yes i know it is narrower and probably not certified!! OH WELL!
Two guys go together and get the best deal out there on 2 Slick mags & harness , use One Slick mag on left side firing lower plugs plus this has Impulse too!
One Bendix lunch box or Eisemann shielded on top plugs ( right mag) . Go fly . The "bump" only has to be on the left front #4 cylinder.
I usually start on left mag only.
This will do two A-65's just fine.

Yep haven't died yet

I also heard of a guy that supposedly, put shielded wires & plugs on, then connected all the shielding at the Dis Cap & grounded them to both Cap & frame. Any idea if that would help. As I am now, with-out the radio even connected, when I want to talk to the guy in Co seat, I take my headphones off & YELL!!

Bendix , Slick, Case , I know that Case gear fits Slick not sure about anything else. I have them all in the shop will check.
