  • What does Taylorcraft insurance cost you?

What does your Taylorcraft insurance cost you?...from whom, and for what cover, and what restrictions?

Here's the list; please try to keep the same format. If anything needs adding, let me know:

    1. Liability insurance limit, in US$
    2. Hull insurance limit, in US$
    3. Premium payable, in US$...this can be total or divided between:
    3a Liability premium
    3b Hull premium
    4. Name of insurer (voluntary)
    5. Policy restrictions, if any
    6. Additional info, if relevant

I suggest USD only as a common denominator; we have several folk from the UK, Canada, and other countries. Use the exchange rate of the day.

    Here's mine:

    1. Liability insurance limit GBP2.5M (= US$4M)
    2. Hull insurance limit GBP25K (= US$40K)
    3. Premium payable GBP860.00 (= US$1375.00) total premium
    4. Name of insurer: Lloyds of London
    5. Policy restrictions: Any 5 named pilots with 500 hours piston time. No time on tailwheel and/or type required, just piston time.
    6. None

We paid $387 this year for a million/100,000 liability only policy for our BC-12D with an O-200. It has an open pilot clause for any private pilot with a tailwheel endorsement.
It is an organizational policy through AVEMCO. For comparison we pay about $9 per year more for a 4 seat C-172 and considerably more for a four seat Stinson 108-1. We have been with Avemco for a long time and I do shop around and they are not the best price for each plane but for the package they are. I have also found them good to work with but have never dealt with a loss.

1200.00 per year for complete coverage, including full hull coverage. BC12D insured for 26,000.00. Named pilots (3 including myself) plus any CFI or licensed AI. IF I decide to have hangar coverage and not fly it for say 3 months, I simply call them and the rate is reduced a good bit. I have had coverage with them for years. Last year, when the hangar collapsed in a snow storm, they arrived, filled out some paper work and paid me in 10 days, full amount. This was Avemco. VERY nice to deal with. (I have over 3000 hours in taildraggers, and I think it would be higher if not for this.) The adjuster mentioned that if it had been an inflight claim it would have "not been this simple". I took that to mean, they would do everything possible not to pay. This is common practice. Another reason why I DO NOT use car gas. I have been told the gas tank is their first stop and that car gas represents a good excuse not to pay. JC

I have 600 hrs in Tcrafts & don't have the policy handy, but it had $25K on the plane, included hanger liability,$50K for me flying anyone elses plane. no deductable,no charge for teardown in case of prop strike. Cost about $900. a year thru AUA. I bought a Bonanza this year & was suprised the cost was about the same,I just had to get my complex & high perf ratings. I love low & slow, but high & fast is easy to get used to also!

            Erik-

Mine's about the same as yours, but I am also covered to land off airport...as long as another plane has landed there before me. When I asked if I was covered to land on the ice my AUA agent stated, "I don't know why you would want to do that, but we cover you crazy Michiganders to do such a thing!" It was a funny conversation.

P.s. Congrats on your Bonanza! How's the '38 coming along?

Good to hear from you. Hope all is well. Yes my policy allowed off airport landings & I kept it here on the farm & flew from here with no problem. I haven't started work on the '38. I's still cramming 2 large hangers into one & sorting out everything I pack ratted over the last 20 years. I have to decide on fixing the '38 or finishing the exp 160HP Taylorcoupe amfib float plane. Probably about the same time to get each flying. I may sell one,we'll see. I sure loved flying the '38. Best flying Tcraft I've ever flown, ask Eric Minnis. Have you tried the ski's yet? Ski flying is the best flying of all!

Re: What does Taylorcraft insurance cost you?

                Here's mine:

                1. Liability limit, $1,000,000 ea. occurrence - $100,000 ea. passenger
                2. Hull insurance limit, $14,000
                3. Premium payable total, $550
                -3a Liability premium, $209
                -3b Hull premium, $341
                4. Name of insurer, AUA
                5. Policy restrictions:

PIC - Min. PVT, with 750 logged hours TT min., of which at least 250 hours min. in conventional gear aircraft, and at least 25 hours in same make and model.

                6. Additional info of special note:

Aircraft use for pleasure or business where no charge is made for such use. Not valid for photography below 1000'. No aerobatic flight performed below 1500'. No mineral exploration, fire fighting, pipeline or power line patrol, hunting, herding or counting animals, yada, yada (this is actually pretty interesting reading fora Saturday morning...)

This policy use to require statement of any named pilots, but that's changed in the past couple of years to use only restrictions in item #5 above. Still, I keep a wild eyed Britt listed as a named pilot, just to help prevent any questions about documentation, and also because having him with his experience level on my named list makes me look like I know what I'm doing...

What's your AUA contact? Would he give me a quote? There's a Brit on my policy too.

Re: What does Taylorcraft insurance cost you?

                    No hull, about $350/year.

I was trying to find an agency who would write me a hull, total-write-off-only coverage at $15,000. My logic was that a repair that cost up to maybe $10,000 is probably pretty easy to do yourself. Goes much more than that and they just call it a total loss. No one would do it though (so far.)

I am beginning to wonder if my good running 12D -85 with a low time engine, even if the plane is a bit rough here and there, isn't worth more than $15k. I would sure hate to think of going shopping for an equivalent for that amount.

                      Robert,

I have been dealing with Pam Sharpe at AUA for a few years. Delightful lady and very helpful. They're all pretty good eggs. No fear of antique airplanes or aviators as far as I can tell.

Pam is fantastic. I wonder if they send all of the antiques her way. She has been a real treat to work with for years. Maybe someone close should check in and see if she has ever actually flown in a Taylorcraft.

I pay 2500.00 for hull and liability through Avemco. I guess that’s what I get for being a low time pilot in paradise.

                            Hey Rob,

Tom Baker told me to contact AUA a number of years ago. So far no issues, but also no claims. It's a small group so I bet any of them would be helpful. My agent is Rob Kamsch. Rob is one of the owner family members.
