  • lower cowl bracing

    Hey guys

I'm trying to help Chuck out on a project we are doing and need to find a copy of a diagram that shows the lower front boot cowl brace. It would have mounted to the center Zeus fastener at the bottom of the lower boot cowl and I am not sure where it mounted but Chuck does. Anyway we are missing that brace and would like to remake one for it. If you can help I would very much appreciate it.

    Re: lower cowl bracing

It is a simple strap bent into a flat bottom "U" with the open end riveted to the boot and a Zeus fastener at the bottom to attach the cowl. I just dug through all my photos and not ONE boot photo showed it! If someone else doesn't post a picture I will take one this weekend with some dimensions.

Taken yesterday. Not sure what year my firewall and boot cowl are...other than not being a 1938 open cowl.

                  Re: lower cowl bracing

By the way, the loop on the side is to hold the case breather hose in place. If you make the hose just a bit long it keeps oil off of the belly. If you route the hose up and over the cylinders most of the oil drains back into the case instead of being blown out which also helps a lot. I am putting the elbow mod on my case fitting which should pretty much eliminate oil loss, and my plane hardly uses any oil at all already.

I thought that was what it was. As for oil loss the engine in 26658 has less them 300 hr my oil consumption is less then a quart in 25 hr it has the elbow mod and does go over the top my vent tub exits next to lower motor mount bolt very little oil on belly Shannon also thanks you, for quick come back . We may want to post some pictures of the oil breather tube routing. I still see a lot of planes with the breather going down from the elbow and oily bellies.

We want all of the tribe members to have nice clean bellies!
