Replacing sling seat?

Has there been a discussion on various replacements for the canvas sling seat? Senior seems to be replacing his - Mike

Airtex lists a replacement seat sling, described as "vinyl-coated nylon" at $104. I am in need of replacing the canvas seat sling in my BC12D-1. Over the years it has shrunken in the side-to-side dimension, away from the sides and is pulling the headliner with it. I actually thought about purchasing some tan canvas and sewing one up myself. Installing the grommets looked like the biggest part of the job. Though what I think will take an hour or two always seems to take ten... I assume this represents an "owner-produced" replacement part.

I made a drawing of mine (with corrections for damage and shrinkage) and got a tent maker to sew it up and put in all the grommets. It came out beautiful and exactly like a brand new factory one for a lot less money. Of course when I made it I was told there weren't any available from a PMA source. I don't know if you can make an owner produced part if they are commercially available. Sometimes it is nice to have a pre-war plane with "no-longer-stocked" parts.

You two are discussing replacing the seat with the same design; I was thinking of replacing the sling with perhaps a wooden bench seat with a back? - Mike

I purchased the Airtex sling about 10 years ago. It is very sturdy, waterproof and easy to clean. The baggage sling is a separate piece (if you need that) and is made of canvas.

Consider putting a stiffener like plywood for example into the back side of the seat pads. It achieve nearly the same result. Dave

My seat cushions have a piece of 1/8" ply for a bottom/back and work great. I consider that an "Upholstery change" which is allowed without changing the airframe. If you change the seat structure you are changing the airframe and could get hit by the Feds if it isn't approved! I don't think it is likely, but I kind of avoid messing with changing what they would call "structure changes". Remember, THEY get to decide if it's a structure change, and the ply in the cushions works fine.

There is a 337 for removal of the rear cross brace, and I think there is one for using cessna 150 seats and another to use an aluminum seat to repace the sling. Tim

I purchased all my interior parts from Airtex and happy with them. One addition I made to the baggage compartment was to have a canvas shop add a flap and velcro that covers the top of the baggage area. It really covers up all the stuff I carry and was the same material/color as the baggage compartment.

Hmm removal of the rear cross brace STC ? I am doing a 41 over as a clipwing so in the experimental cat I was not too woried about the paperwork BUT I am concerned about messing with this area because it looks like STRUCTURE?

Any ideas ?
