Re: Acf-50?
In "Navy speak" we called it Mil-C-81309. Try an Army/Navy surplus store. It came in spray cans and "paint" cans. It's great as a water displacent and corrosion inhibitor. Not so good as a lubricant (which for some reason guys thought is was like WD-40, which is also a pretty poor lube).

There are some good products used in the sporting goods and gun stores I suspect, which might be equal for this purpose.Taylorcraft : Making Better Aviators for 75 Years... and Counting

Re: Acf-50?
The acf 50 is expensive but I use it for lubing most things on the aircraft. It creeps very well so if you get it in the vicinity it will find its way to where it was supposed to go. I have found a can will probably do about 4 annuals which comes out to just a few dollars per plane.
I do find the spray stream a bit hard to control but overall I think it is pretty hard to beat for hinges and pulleys.
I know others that use the LPS-2 for the same purpose.

Re: Acf-50?
Just to jump in here...ACF-50 is an anti-corrosion product...not a primary lubricant. It is equivalent to Corrosion-X or LPS-3. If you wish for lubrication, try LPS-1 or LPS-2. DocDoc TF #680

PS - it came in yesterday from Spruce.

Re: Acf-50?
Never heard of oiling the outside of the cable and don't know how you could oil the inside (well, I can think of some ways, but the mess would be terrible!)
I would think wiping the outside with oil would be almost as bad as wiping them with solvent. Solvent would remove all the lubricant from the outside, but make them really pretty (for a while). Like Robert said, oil on the outside would look nice for a while, but the cable would be filthy in no time.

Re: Acf-50?
If you are interested, I have an article on corrosion and corrosion inhibitors in the July, 2010 EAA Chapter 92 (Orange, CA) Newsletter. And...Kroil (or Aerokroil as the aerosol is known) is a great lubricant with creeping properites. DocDoc TF #680
