Universal Joint

I have noticed slack in the the control column when moving the ailerons. It appears that the universal joint has some wear in the bolts/holes that is causing the movement. Can these be rebuilt? Any shops out there that do these? Could the holes be bored oversized and new (metric) bolts installed:clue?::

I reworked mine a few years ago. The part that was worn on mine was just a piece of 1" square tubing with cross holes drilled through it. It was not at all difficult to reproduce. It was a noticable improvement, but did not remove all of the slack.

Thank you for sharing this. It will help in getting the slack out! I only wish there was a special "oversize" bolt that one could simply drill out the original holes and replace with "oversize" bolts. That would assure all slack would be removed and make a simple fix.

I welded mine up & then re-drilled & reamed the holes:




Each pair of opposing 3/16" diameter holes are displaced from each other, this gives clearance between the AN3 bolts that are at 90 degrees inside this assembly. The section is 3/4" internal seamless square.

Where did you find a reamer that small? I've looked in several catalogs and can't find one.

3/16" reamer? Fairly standard size, I would have thought. I purchased mine through a tool & die stockist in the UK, Tracy Tools.

For reamer and such tool go to local industrial supply company if they dont have the can order it.
But you are NOT working on a aircraft!

Is the "hole" you are referring to the one that gets fill with money?

I thought it was MUCH larger & required MASSIVE influx of AMU's!
