I was at the Alaska Airmans Trade show yesterday, Univair has brand new tapered axle gear available. COST: $1500.00 per side. About 3 times as much as a cub. They look nice but didnt do the upgraded brace and my prewar have several wires for the fabric that thier gear doesnt have. Tim

I think that they did the same thing with struts, if someone else produces them cheaper, the price will go down drastically. Tim

What they need is a straight axel to put 6" clevelands on.

For that price, they should give you a kiss on the cheek!

That is expensive but the fact that they are available at all is a good thing, eh?

My guess is that those that complain about the high prices also complain about their boss every day and work and how much money he or she makes off of them. If you can't say anything positive about a company making an attempt at supplying parts for our aircraft why say anything at all?

Hey, it's the Tribe. We are family here and we grump a lot. The cost of the gear IS high, but they have to recover their costs on VERY few gear replacements.
We all have a choice. We can make the fixtures and build one ourselves. It CAN be done. There is nothing in a Taylorcraft airframe that can't be made in a nice garage workshop with enough patience. OR...we can pony up the cash and buy one. Money or time. Our choice.
Fact of life though, we have to support the guys making the parts for us. Not everybody has a fancy garage.

And the price will come down when there is competition. If it doesn't kill both competitors.

                Re: Gear

The price is not "high", but rather out of many's budget.

I get emails all the time from prospective customers looking to buy our camera gimbal systems. Some of them cost as much as a compact car and an average persons 3 month salary, and I'd guess 1/3 of those people who email me end up replying back after I tell them the cost and they say "how the heck does it cost that much if the parts used to make them total only about $1,500!" I used to get irritated. Now I just reply back and say they are more than welcome to buy some CNC machines, buy CAD/CAM software, learn to use all of it and make their own. Now that camera gimbal would cost at least $60,000. Most never reply back. I find the ones that bitch about price would have never bought one anyway.

It's all about quantity. Selling 10 sets or less of those gear legs a year is going to necessarily force the cost to the level we see. Selling 10 a month would considerably drive the cost down. It's not efficient to make onesies and twosies and the price reflects that.

I too would love to see a straight axle version for some Matco disc brakes.

Boy DJ you hit on the head! I get those calls too. When they tell me that so and so can do it for less I tell them that is the guy you want. I sure as H*ll don't want them belly achene to me after the fact. And you are right, when they call looking for the cheapest price they go to the competition and then don't pay him! That is where I get my satisfaction.

                      Re: Gear

Since the factory is in silent mode you have one source for a new one. The only alternative is to repair it. Even a repair will require a fixture to hold the gear and that won't come cheap (at least for the first one).
I know a great welder and he can use my 45 gear to build the fixture from, but you would need to talk cost with him.

His name is Dennis too but he takes the strut to his shop and fixes it there. He does really nice work too. By the way, he is looking for a Taylorcraft project. The one the hangar fell on would have been perfect, but he missed it. He wants a COMPLETE plane he can do the welding repairs on and recover.
I wish he would partner with me on my 45. He did all of the weld repairs on that fuselage and it is beautiful. I just don't have time yet to put it back together with all the work needed on the 41.

Also there are 1 set of axels on E bay that might be taylorcraft, instead of doing a big search, when you enter Ebay just type in Taylorcraft and let it find everything, usually less than 5 pages, some are pictures, some models, and then real Taylorcraft stuff.
