    Michael,
If you find any extra bulb Oil Temps please let me know. I have been looking for a couple of years. Here is what you are looking for. They are made by U.S. Gauge instrument company.
You "can" keep flying with a Smiths gauge, but it doesn't look the same. If you have a post war panel where the whole gauge face is exposed, there is also supposed to be a Taylorcraft logo on the face of the instrument (the 41 has a mask over most of the face of the instrument and no logo).

As always Hank your the go to guy. If I find any i will surely let you know. Ther is a guy here in Cleveland that rebuilds them and does a beautiful job and is reasonable. I think he can supply the temp bulb. I will probably just use the Scott one I have and put some scres in the pannel where the original mounting holes are in cas I come across the correct guages. Watch for my post on the BC 12D pannel. I found a very original one and it had what I think was a factory original radio monting plate where the glove box on the left side is. Spent an entire day welding closed some hacked up cut outs in the pannel and want to keep it as original a possible. Thanks

I do have a US Gauge that I'm probably willing to let go. It needs to be
re built as the bulb broke off. Gauge worked fine.

              Re: original T craft guages

I got dibs on the next one. Be prepared. I was quoted $300 to put a new bulb and line on a U.S. Gauge Oil Temp! That is more than a working gauge usually sells for! That means the core isn't worth much.
The oil pressures are a lot cheaper to fix. Treat those temperature bulb lines like they are glass! You are spending $300 when you hear that soft HISSSSSS.
Another thing, make VERY SURE you are screwing the bulb in with the right hardware!!! There are bulbs that go into a flat base hole and ones that go into a tapered hole. Put the bulb in the wrong hole and it will leak. Tighten the nut to stop the leak, and you break the line! HISSSSS!
              Hank

Anybody know a less expensive repair? That would raise the value of the cores. Maybe we could figure a way to put different guts inside a broken U.S. Gauge case.

John Wolfe. They quoted me around $165.00 to repair the US Oil Pressure Gauge. No yellow tag but I understand they do Keystones work. This included the bulb. I bought a Richardson from AC spruce. The gauge mounting is different but not an installation problem, cost around $75.00. Phone no. and repair info should be on a similiar thread I believe started by Hank.

                    Re: original T craft guages

                    Lloyd,
I think you mean that price for the Oil Pressure (close to the price I heard). There is no bulb on a pressure gauge. The oil Temp gauge has a long copper or soft brass line to a bulb that attaches to the engine case. The line and bulb are filled with a gas that expands when heated to move the indicator. Problem is if there is even a tiny hole the gas escapes and the gauge stops working. That's why they are so hard to repair.
The Oil Pressure gauge has a threaded fitting on the back and just hooks to a line to read pressure with a Bourdon Tube (a coiled tube that tries to straighten when it is pressurized). Much easier to repair.
If they can actually fix an Oil Temp fro that price I REALLY need a broken Oil Temp!
                    Hank

                      Re: original T craft guages

Hank. I will check with Wolf today on the price to fix the one with the bulb. In any case if you need the Temp guage its yours. My Tcraft is anything but original. I doubt I will find both guages anyway. If you get a chance call me 419-573-5043 or e_mail me direct [email protected] I may be able to get a deal on the rebuild.

I will most likely find a Scott pressure guage to match my Scott Temp guage.

I would rather see the corect guage go on a restoration tather than mine which is really just a rebuild.

                        Re: original T craft guages

Let me check. I think I actually have the Scott gauges that were in my 45 when I bought it. If so, ans I can get some originals for the restoration you can have the Scott's. They worked great, just didn't have the right face. They go in from the front with a bridge bar across the back and a nut to pull them tight to the panel. If you paint the chrome bezel black and put two short screws and nuts through the panel holes you will hardly notice they are different. I was the only one who ever seemed to notice mine were the wrong ones.
You do need to remember that the Scott gauges are automotive, not aviation (even though there are probably more of them on Taylorcrafts than the right ones). They seem to actually be more reliable than the aviation ones. I always worry about that tube on the original Oil Temp. If you have an electrical system, the electric gauges are much better (more reliable) than these antiques.
Everybody remember the AD on Oil pressure gauges! You need a restrictor in the line so that the oil doesn't all pump into the cockpit if the line fails. Losing all your oil in flight is bad enough without contending with the emergency while your lap is full of hot oil.
I'll try to find the Smiths gauges tonight and send pictures (if I can find them).
                        Hank

Hank do you mean scott or smith. I have one Scott guage and it is Aircraft. Is states that on the dial. It is the Oil Temp. Either way you can have the Oil Temp for your restoration. I checked on the rebuild Lloyd was correct $165.

I honestly can't remember now. I need to dig it out and look at it. I just hope it isn't boxed up on the shelf at the airport. If it is in the guest bedroom I will have a photo tonight, if at the airport, it may take a while. There are a LOT of boxes at the airport!
