  • Streamline strut manufacture

Some time back there was a bit of discussion on making new struts from scratch. It was especially interesting to those of us with really old planes since we didn't want the larger size of the new replacement struts that were all that was available right after the strut mess from the factory (the OLD factory, not the current one).
Now there are struts available from several sources and the Wag ones are even very close to the size of my pre-war ones.
Back then I talked about a friend I have in Germany who is making his own streamline tube from round stock. Better late than never I have some pictures of his process and tools. Achim Engels, from Fokker-Team-Schorndorf, makes WW-I replicas that are really works of art and so accurate he puts his own stamp on every part. Museum experts have mistaken his work for originals!
You can see more of his work in the FTS thread at http://www.worldwar1aeroplanesinc.or...splay.php?f=97

    Re: Streamline strut manufacture

The process is interesting for sure. Of course, all streamlined tubing is made from round seamless tubing.

The structural steel seamless streamlined stuff (SSSSS) has to be X-rayed, because of potential cracking along the trailing edge, which adds to the cost.

The only thing worse than watching streamline tubing being made is watching streamline wires being made...the skill of a chap with a hide mallet beating the waviness out is a joy to behold.

The truly fascinating thins is he doesn't get this stuff made. He BUILDS the tools and make all the parts, for the whole replica! Amazing, and a great guy too.

You should see the neat little pedal planes he and his wife build for their kids.
