Windshield trim, upper & lower

All my ?'s, sorry guys. Just trying to get this thing done.

I have a '41. It came with no windshield, and 2 very beat up trims.
The upper looks fairly easy to fabricate, but the lower looks like it needs to go though a roll former.

Can any of you guys make these?
Does any one have either of these for sale?

Aaron,

I would suggest you do a search on this forum for the windshield trim you asked about. As I recall, someone here had one for sale or had the ability to make it.

IF you absolutely can't find one, it wouldn't be too hard to make it yourself. The best way would be to have a roller. But even without that, you could make it yourself using O temper aluminum sheet. Once you got it formed you would need to have it heat treated.

Obviously finding a used one would be easiest, but don't let having to make it intimidate you. It is not that hard.

No need for a roller. A plastic screw driver handle or rounded block of wood and a shot bag will do. Also no need for heat treating soft is OK.

Since it is a 41, do you want to put in the original 4 piece windshield or are you planning to retrofit the post war "blown" one piece?
I have the patterns for the pre-war transparent and aluminum parts.

We want to do the one piece if it can be done.
I think that's what was on it because the lower trim is just one long piece of aluminum.

I have the pattern for the metal strip too but it was never used before the war. The technology for blowing clear plastic was developed during the war.

Lots (almost all) pre-war Taylorcrafts had post war windshields fitted. Those with them and no paperwork could be in BIG trouble if their IA's ever figure out the windshields aren't really legal and they are in a snotty mood.

My blown windshield was cracked and when I looked through the logs there was no record of it ever being installed. I think my IA might have winked at it and let it go, but I thought it would be easy to go back to original (it wasn't).

ALL windshields are hard to fit. Replacing busted parts on the 4 piece is just a lot cheaper (in $$$, not time).

Okay, I can flatten out my lower trim and cut a new piece to match.
But, how do I get a nice bend it when its curved shaped?

You don't want to do that if it is repairable. It is curved in two directions at once and if you start "smoothing" it you will stretch it. Once it is stretched it will take a master metal bumper to get it back. In your re-flattened form it isn't the shape of the original blank they started with. It will have been stretched twice.
Is there enough interest out there for me to make a buck to make these things?

OK, now THAT was funny.

I guess i need to bring mine home and start designing a buck to make them on. You might want to ask around. I have to be the SLOWEST person on the group at making stuff.

Anybody remember when I started making the placards for the cockpit. I JUST got enough of the compass Taylorcraft logos done this week to mail them out. Sorry to the first guys that asked. I ended up not having enough for all the ones requested and couldn't remember who asked first. I HOPE to get them in envelopes and mailed before Monday.
