  • Fiberglass Taylorcraft

I just received an email from a friend about an ad in EBay. This is an advertisment for a Fiberglass Taylorcraft.

Here is the link for the ad

    Re: Fiberglass Taylorcraft

Back in the 50's My Dad got a field approval for fiberglassing the wings of the airplane that I currently own. The owner at the time was somewhat of a Nut!
this guy fiberglassed everything! propellers, floats, all kinds of stuff. He talked my Dad into getting it done.I dont think it worked out very good because it was recoverd the right way not long after.

Did they ever sell any of these? I have never seen one.

        Re: Fiberglass Taylorcraft

Are we talking about a regular Taylorcraft covered with Razorback fiberglass cloth or the Taylorcraft Model 15 with the fiberglass shell over the fuselage tubes? The 15 was a 4 place and is pretty rare. I think there was on 4 of them last time I checked.
I have only seen one Taylorcraft covered with Razorback and it was HEAVY!

The guy that actually invented Razorback (what became razorback, he was the one that got the multiple STC for the process) used to work for Taylorcraft. Ken Culler is his name....been a long time friend of mine. He also invented Superseam cement.

The "fiberglass" Taylorcraft was the Model 20; the Model 15 was standard tube and fabric. The FAA shows 12 Model 15's and 11 Model 20's registered.

Cool on the Model 15's and 20's. I have never actually gotten to see one. Would really like to help with an annual on one someday (only way to have a realistic excuse to remove panels). Lots of curiosity on how they are made.

There was a Model 15 locally here for a while, but I think it was sold. Rather big airplane, reminded me of a Stinson 108 mixed with Tcraft parts. Forrest has a fuselage in one of his hangers, and it looks heavy! big window frames etc... Looked rather spacious on the inside.

I saw one in upper New York state, the spars are as thick as a 2 X 4.

I think I saw in the logbooks and also in a copy of the records from the FAA that the fibreglass my dad used came from the Herters catalog!!
