    Re: Get together

Another thought is to have posted the various great already organized fly-ins and kind of "piggy back" on them .
We could have the Taylorcrafts park together and it would be organized by a Member from that airport or the closest one. I see a lot of you doing it now. I will follow this thread and you guys just do it!

Alliance this year is the same as always the week-end after the 4th of July ... the 9th , 10 th and 11th . You who have a lot of free time could do Sentimential Journey, Waco , Here , Air Venture and then go home, Wow what an Adventure. Ted Miller does it all the time in his PT-17....

      Re: Get together

The Virginia State Fly-In is in Suffolk VA this year (SFQ) and there are three Taylorcrafts there now, soon to be 4 (several should be flying by then).

I would be glad to set up a Taylorcraft area and provide a "home base" in my hangar with a refrigerator and, hopefully by that time, a working A/C in my workshop area in the hangar.

Don't know the dates yet but will find out and post them if anyone wants to come to South East Virginia.

          Re: Get together

I think with a group as large as ours, maybe we need to look at a chapter organization. This would make it easier to host more local events. That also would make more sense for folks living on both coasts and in the central states and not having to travel quite so far. I would be willing to help on this, but I am not sure I have the skills to construct it. What do you think?

I'm on........maybe just for one day....

I'm sure that other "local" [ read: MD, VA, PA, NC] Tcrafts can be arranged to attend thru this forum...

PS: The dates for the Virginia Regional Fly-in are: Saturday May 22 and Sunday May 23, 2010. The VA Beach Warbirds fly-in is also on May 22.

              Re: Get together

Just got the dates and saw someone beat me to it. The fly-in starts at 8:00 and runs to 5 on Saturday and goes from 8 to 4 Sunday. The fly-in site is at http://virginiaflyin.org/

The Fighter Factory has their maintenance and restoration facilities on the field at Suffolk and the museum is in Virginia Beach. The Fighter Factory and the Virginia Beach airport where they operate the planes are real "must sees". The museum in Virginia Beach is the larges private collection of historic aircraft in the world and almost ever plane flys and is a competition winner. Their site is at http://www.vbairport.com/index.php and the museum is at http://www.militaryaviationmuseum.org/.

If lots of folks would like to go to the museum we may need to get a van or something. They don't allow people to fly in without prior approval (although a good group fly out might be fun to do!...if they will let us)

                  Re: Get together

I'm in north east Maryland. If I were to come down to the fly-in, it looks like I'd Go down the eastern shore of maryland to get around bal-wash area. Is this correct? I have lousy I Com radio with pen cell batterys so I'm nervous BEFORE I take off! In younger days I would have just drawn a line and gone, but those days be gone. I sure don't need an F-16 harrasing me. What say you Hank? jc

                    Re: Get together

                    Jim,

From NE Maryland if you went directly to York THV you would avoid P40, the Washington Mode C Veil, and R4009.

I don't know if you are at Cecil Co. or Harford Co, but I spent a couple of minutes on Skyvector.com and came up with this route which goes NW from Harford and passes across the north edge of Pittsburgh Class B. It is just a suggestion to show you what you can do on Skyvector. The advantage of this route is you are going from airport to airport, so if you have mechanical problems or need to pee, you don't have to go off course. Also, all but the destination and one waypoint have weather reporting.

As you put your cursor over an airport with weather reporting, it will automatically show you what the current weather is. If you right click on a spot or airport, it will open up a small window with the airport name and or a lat/long to add to the flight plan. Click on the "plan". When you click on the second point, it will draw the line showing mag heading and dist. Play with it. It is a lot of fun.

To move the map, click and hold, then drag the map. There is a small crosshair at the center of the map. If you drag the map down to where the crosshair is off the map, you will see the name of the next map in the upper right corner. It will show 3-4 choices, WAC, Enroute, or the name of the corresponding sectional. Click on which one you want to open. The flight plan will keep up with you. You can click flight plan on New York City, close that map, open the Los Angeles sectional, click on LAX flightplan and it will draw a pink line all the way across the entire U.S. If you want to open maps a long way off, click on the globe at the top of the page. You can probably guess what the airports icon gives you.

Check it out. I like to use it to get a preliminary idea of how long it will take to fly somewhere. It isn't as fancy as a lot of other flight planning software, but it is quick and simple. It is easy to use once you have played with it for a few minutes.

Harford OW3 to York THV avoids

                    From Harford OW3

315 magnetic for 37 nm to York THV

331 magnetic for 21 nm to Carlisle N95

287 magnetic for 53 nm to Altoona-Blair Co AQO at Martinsburg

309 magnetic for 41nm to Indiana Co./Jimmy Stewart IDI

310 magnetic for 34 nm to Waltman (pvt strip)

289 magnetic for 31nm to New Castle UCP (Just barely clears PIT Mode C Veil)

273 for 31 nm to Barber Field

                    Total 248 nm.

                      Re: Get together

                      Jim,
I'm the wrong guy to ask on this. I also have a ICOM A-22 and a pair of headsets as my total avionics package. I don't even have a hand held GPS yet.

I fly to the west and south and 80% of my flights take off and land at the same airport, 99% are to and from the same 3 or 4. I get plenty of "high tech" and pressure at work. When I fly a Taylorcraft (which has been WAY to long ago) I avoid control areas and military traffic like the plague (which isn't easy with half a dozen Navy field and Langley AFB all within a stones throw). When I wanted to upgrade my nav system, I replace all the windows.
I would take Pearson's advice or someone else with experience flying cross country through this area.

I am already planning to start flying up the Eastern Shore and really want to fly to Rhinebeck NY and Ohio to the Taylorcraft fly-in when my plane is back together. I can't just "play" in my own back yard forever. You guys are having way to much fun and I want in!

                      Hank

OK, one time, but that was on a NASA B-200 at night in weather to go to a meeting at the FAA Tech center in Atlantic City. It wasn't much fun and there was a NASA test pilot sitting next to me so I wouldn't kill everyone on board. They thought I should actually FLY some of the equipment my program was developing.

                        Re: Get together

Many many thanks for your suggestions! I too always fly northeast or north from my Harford County Maryland Airport (W42). Like Hank I like to relax instead of worrying about restricted areas and the chance of blundering into a "shoot down zone". The Taylorcraft has turned out to be a great airplane for me. Although I flew one years ago, quite a bit, I had forgotten how it handles, floats, lands, and gets out with only 65 hp. It is (in my very humble estimation) the BEST of the Aeronca, j3 cub, etc. type aircraft. I was also VERY fortunate to have had Russ Hardy build it as he left nothing to chance. He builds a VERY nice Taylorcraft! I might add that the Eastern Shore of Maryland is miles and miles of runway as( its all corn and soybeans) its very flat and you can land most anywhere in case of trouble. Thanks again, JC

                          Hey guys,
On May 15th we will be having a fly-in at 0M3 John A. Baker field in Hohenwald TN. We have lots of tailwheel airplanes at the airport to start with, and would like to see even more. A friend of ours will have some of his war planes there and several more will bring theirs. We would like to see many more of you guys, and meet you for a good time.
There will be primitive camping on field or you can go to the hotel in town. We do have a courtesy car available. Also we live directly across the street from the airport so it's a short walk across the street.
Come join us for a great armed forces day celebration.
Here is a link to our airport website for basic info.["http://lewiscountyairport.com"]

Jim:May I suggest the following flight plan for the SFQ get together:

                                Fallston W42= Home base

                                SouthEast...

This flight plan will run you thru the MD Eastern shore, Chesapeake Bay; very nice scenic flight and away from the Wash DC ADIS=blackhawk escort area. Just check both "R" areas before departing to see if they are active=hot.

I could meet you at St. Mary's airport if you wish or at Tappahannock XSA located south of St Mary's. Let me know.
