Hi folks What is the best timing advance you have tried on the old lycoming.

I always had mine set at the factory numbers. Remember it is an old engine and might not like the extra stress.

      Re: O-145-B2 Timing

Hi Larry, It's been over a year since I swapped the Lyc. out to Iowa... But I seem to remember that the timing *BTDC is stamped on the engine data plate. The # 20* for the B-2 Sticks in my mind. I'll dig up a copy of my old lyc manual and check for sure. A lot of the Lyc's were upgraded as time went by 50hp-55hp-65hp...the timing changed as well. Sometimes the new info was not stamped into the plate. Makes a big difference in the power to have the right timing.....I found out...;-)

Found the Lycoming "Handbook of Instructions with Parts Catalog" "Model O-145 and GO-145 Aviation Engines"

        Dated JAN. 1947..............

        The specs for the O-145-B2 say:"Spark Occurs--Degrees B.T.C. 20*"

This is old info, it is possible that things have changed in a mere 63 years.
Info could be in the front of the engine logbook too???

          Guys:

The Type Certificate is the definitive source for this kind of information, and, the answer is still 20* for the -B2.

too much time on my hands....

The -B2 engine is eligible with 25* BTC timing if you are using 80 octane fuel. It was certified for 73 octane at 20* timing. (See Note 5 in the TC)

I set the timing on my 145 to 26 btdc this afternoon. It did not seem to help on power any. But what I did notice was that it didnt crank as well for me.So I am going Back to 20 degrees till I find out some more info.
